Manufacturer's Description
Encased within a slim metal body is Sony's latest pocket digital camera, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 (DSCP200). Don't just be dazzled by the stylish exterior&.a powerhouse lies within! Razor sharp resolution and crystal clear images are within your grasp because of the 7.2 effective Megapixel Super HAD CCD and 3X optical zoom lens. Guaranteed for quality and reliability, the Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens extends out from the body of the DSC-P200 when required, keeping the lines elegant and the body slim. The higher resolution means that your images will print larger and will carry finer detail, while the 7.2 effective Megapixel CCD also extends Sony Smart Zoom capability.

Of course that's only half the picture. You can keep shooting as long as you need, because Sony's STAMINA technology means the Cyber-shot DSC-P200 digital camera can shoot up to 370 high quality images on one charge of the InfoLithium battery. Lending a hand is the unique Sony Real Imaging Processor, helping to make the Cyber-shot DSC-P200 digital camera highly energy efficient as well as speeding up the camera operations, you're sure never to miss a shot due to "shutter lag!" As well as boosting the performance of the camera, the Real Imaging Processor works in conjunction with the high resolution Super HAD CCD and Carl Zeiss lens to produce pictures of excellent quality. Rich, vibrant colours, clear images, sharper focus and more accurate exposures are all possible with Sony's Real Imaging Processor providing the heart of the Sony DSC-P200 digital camera.

The back of the Cybershot DSC-P200 presents another surprise. A large 2.0-inch LCD can be used to playback your pictures and adjust the camera settings. Bigger than you would expect for a pocket camera of these dimensions, the LCD is protected from harm and enhanced by a clear polycarbonate panel. As it is, the LCD keeps to the slim lines of the camera by being set flush into the metal body. Animated and enlarged icons make choosing functions simpler and it's easier to read the menu or select from any of the camera's exposure settings and nine Scene Selection modes.

Fully automatic for ease of use or manual exposure for the more advanced approach, these features allow you to be as creative as you want. The scene selection modes ensure that you'll always get an ideal picture in any of nine common situations including fireworks displays, beach activities, fast fun and games in the snow.

There's certainly more to the Sony DSC-P200 than meets the eye. You can use USB 2.0 to connect directly to a PictBridge printer or hook up to a PC and use the bundled software for even more creativity with your pictures. A Sony Memory Stick is provided to store your images - simply remove and slot the Memory Stick into any supported device such as VAIO computers for even more playback options. Not only that, but the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 is also capable of recording full screen high-quality MPEG movies for viewing on a TV.

For even greater extensibility, the Cyber-shot DSC-P200 supports an optional powered cradle, the Cyber-shot station. With this you can connect to a PC, printer or AV device, using a remote control to view your images on TV, while the camera battery charges up in the dock.

4.0 out of 5 stars How to overcome the blurry flash sync prob. in low light, 2 Jan 2006
I own this camera and was having a bad time trying to get good results using the flash. I found the solution. The blurry image issue with the P200 is easily
fixed by setting the camera to "M" (manual) mode, setting the aperture
to wide open, the shutter speed to 1/60-1/100 second and forcing the
flash to "On". The camera remembers these settings even when turned off
so all you have to do for a flash shot is spin the dial to "M" and fire.
One nice thing about the P200 is the flash syncs to 1/1,000 second.
This will freeze anything within the flash's range of 12'-15'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a good camera, 15 May 2006
By S. Kirycos "chotti_99" (Cheltenham, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been in to cameras and photography since i was 17. I was always sceptical about moving from film to digital. I believed that you couldn't match the quality provided by film with an affordable digital camera. I was wrong. This camera is perfect. The picture quality is outstanding. At 7MP you can't really expect cheaper than what this camera is going for. This camera is also extremely easy to use. I have never used a digital camera before and I got to grips with almost all the functions without the use of the manual. It is very well built and very stylish. I don't think you could find a more good looking camera unless you looked at the ultra thin ones. One other point!!! Sony use the Carl Zeiss lens and it shows. These lenses put the other big names (Nikon, Cannon) to shame.

The screen is big enough for anyone to review their pictures. The video is good and even the sound is better than i've heard on most cameras. The battery duration is very good (just as well as it doesn't take standard alkaline batteries) and it re-charges pretty fast.

There is one thing that bothers me just a bit. When you switch it on the lens that extends feels a bit flimsy. But that is the only thing I could find wrong with this camera.

I have to say that I am really impessed with this camera. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Amateurs in digital photography like me will find it very easy to use and I believe experienced users will find the picture quality extremely good.

4.0 out of 5 stars New to digital photography, but all I can say is WOW!, 16 Feb 2005
By A Customer
Bought this last week with a 512MB memory stick pro (Sandisk - Sony too expensive for basically the same product!). The memory stick Pro is a must have if you want to get quality video from this camera by the way!

Anyway, the camera itself has been dubbed a P150 makeover but I am already getting the impression it is a little more than a quick nip and tuck job.

Yes it has a more desirable 2inch screen crammed inside a small frame and boasts much the same features as it's P150 predecessor, but it also has a much sought after (in the P150 model) auto white balance mode. Yes, it DOES exist and it DOES work! Ignore anyone who says this mode does not exist on this model - it is a lie!

The picture quality at 7mp is excellent - a few indoor shots we took in auto mode were sharp but maybe would have benefitted from some manual tinkering to get the colours a bit better. My wife who works on quality graphics and photos in her job thinks the noise levels are fine and she works on some quality photos.

The movie mode is capable, although we found the focus was slow to catch up with our daughter's first steps towards us! Also the files come in mpeg format which we found can be pain to convert into anything else (such as DV) but there's plenty of software/freeware out there that can sort that out. The video quality is close to, but not quite as good as our Panasonic DV camera which is 3 years old, if thats anything to judge by. Impressive in my opinion that it is so close to DV quality.

A 512MB stick will hold about 6 minutes of video at hi-res. At low-res (for email) you could fit a full length movie onto it!

Design is great, and for it's slight stature it seems solid and robust - no doubt a carry case will be a requirement eventually though.

Red eye reduction mode works a dream - my daughters blue eyes had next to no red-eye in them when usually she normally photographs looking like some sort of demon!

Macro mode is great too - you can zoom right into a very small area and the detail is astonishing. We took a photo of our baby monitor and only then realised how grubby it was!!!

There's plenty of options to play around with, and although this is essentially meant to be a point and shoot, I have a feeling more experienced photographers will like whats on offer here. There are also extras that can be added such as additional lenses, filters, and a slave flash to name but three.

One downside if you are a P150 owner - the Cybershot station for P150 is NOT compatible with the P200 - there is a new Cybershot station for the P200. Although this doesn't affect me, I've docked a star for this point as I am sure it will be a problem for some looking to upgrade.

Haven't used any of the software provided - prefer to use our own - and in any case you can download the pictures/movies straight off the Memory stick onto your computer anyway.

Otherwise thoroughly pleased with this purchase and Amazon's price is the cheapest I've seen so far.
