Product Description
Eric Rohmer's light-hearted romantic comedy, set amongst the vineyards of the Rhône Valley, concludes his film cycle THE TALES OF THE FOUR SEASONS. Best friends Magali, a widow, and Isabelle, a happily married bookshop owner, have known each other since childhood. Although Magali enjoys her life as a wine grower, she admits that she would relish some male companion- ship; a confession that prompts Isabelle to secretly find her friend a man. After placing a lonely hearts ad, Isabelle chooses a suitor, but finds that things don't quite go according to plan...

Synopsis

4.0 out of 5 stars Gentle, subtle, enjoyable, 28 Jun 2005

This is the last in the 'Tales of the Four Seasons' series of films by Eric Rohmer, and it is just as accomplished as the other three. Rohmer's films (except the occasional historical foray) are always easily identifiable - full of laid back scenes, languid conversations, and the lack of much plot action.

The action, instead, occurs in the emotional lives of the characters, and in this case, in the life of a middle aged winemaker living in the beautifully filmed French countryside, who is tentatively looking for love with the help/interference of her friend. There are moments of affection, embarrassment, hope and real poignancy, and as always with Rohmer this is a film full of affection for its characters, through all their misunderstandings and struggles.

It's life affirming and leaves a glow of satisfaction, although this is not perhaps one for fans of Hollywood action thrillers to buy and devour.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best film made in the 1990s. Anywhere. By anyone., 9 Mar 2000

A very, very good script played by wonderfully-cast actors, directed by someone who knows when (and how) to move a camera and when to keep it still (and dares to defy the Tolstoyan edict that happy families can't be interesting.) Saturated with the golden autumn light and shade of the title, its juxtaposition of 20-something and 40-something couples is as nearly perfect as anything I've ever seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Generous, humourous, humane, dappled with autumn, 28 Mar 2001
By A Customer
What are the things which make up romantic compatibility? And from where does love arise between two people? Can individual's sense of self be merged? These questions are at the heart of this warm, sunny and occasionally quirky film which is set in the vineyards and cafes of the Rhone valley. I watched it in a mid-winter cold spell, and it certainly lifted the oppression of the winter for a little while. The story line is strong and we are kept guessing- the lives of Magali, a widow and mildly eccentric wine-grower, and Isabelle, a happily married book-shop owner are subtly portrayed with a certain dept of characterisation. Overall, it is a generous, enjoyably humorous and genuinely humane film.
