Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Though Kirsty MacColl has appeared as a guest vocalist and backing singer with pretty much every musical act in Britain bar Wolfsbane and the Marching Band of Her Majesty's Coldstream Guards, she has been oddly reticent about recording her own material. Kite, the first of her two solo albums, confirms what a shame that is. The songs on Kite were written alone or with collaborator Pete Glenister and betray the musical influences that might be expected, given her guest appearances, with particular reference to The Smiths (by way of acknowledgement, Johnny Marr co-writes one song here and plays on several). The vocals, too, are unsurprisingly immaculate--MacColl has a rare knack of sounding like nobody else on earth while never parting company with the tune. However, it's MacColl's words that are the real revelation--she's funny, sharp and clever, with a fondness for puns and wordplay that never quite runs away with itself. This rereleased version includes 10 rare bonus tracks. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars High Flying Kite, 19 Mar 2007
By J. Alexander "markmaccoll" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of my favourite albums of all time and I do not know quite where to begin in describing it. Firstly, Kirsty's voice is one of the most original and beautiful voices you'll ever hear. In the darkest times I walk in the night and play this CD and it makes me feel very tearful yet that a close friend is with me. The opener 'Innocence' is a strong tirade against male chauvinism and is striding and grand. Listening to 'Free World' feels as if you are on a motorbike riding through tunnels of lights....it's hard to describe but when you hear it you'll know what I mean. The lyrics of this song, I suppose are against Thatcher but in this age thay could be equally against blair. 'Mother's Ruin' is an ode to hope from a dark situation; 'leave a light on and don't shut the door' a moving closing line. 'Days' has always sounded to me like a prayer but a spiritual one rather than religious. 'No Victims' is a tirade against love rats and I feel is one of the greatest white soul records ever made.
In this celebrity culture the lyrics of 'Fifteen Minutes'; 'Then there's always the fame, autographs now and again' is staggeringly significant and 'Don't Come The Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim' is a very special song about a guy trying to be like the gang but he can't change because there's 'a light in his eyes' that tells us 'there's somebody in'.
The closer 'You and Me Baby' is Kirsty at her most intimate. It's you and her at the end of the world holding hands to walk the final mile.
Do forgive me..I've run out of words..This album is staggering. Nothing else comes near it. Absolutely nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genius sadly missed, 30 Nov 2005

(REAL NAME)
In my opinion this is Kirsty MacColl's finest hour. This is a brilliantly crafted collection of songs. The album combines folk, country and pop music perfectly. MacColl displays her lyrical ability here and the songs are cleverly written, much in the Ray Davies mould. The best known track on the album is probably the version of Davies' classic 'Days'.
There are many great songs here; standout tracks?? Innocence, Don't come the Cowboy with me Sonny Jim! and No victims.
However, all of the songs are great and there are many talented musicians guesting on the album. Notably Johnny Marr, Dave Gilmour and Robbie McIntosh.
You won't be disappointed with this purchase.
Its such a shame that she was took away when she clearly had much more to offer.
