The DiMAGE Z20's 8X optical Mega Zoom and 4X digital zoom combine for a total 32X zoom, allowing you to capture everything from sports events to panoramic scenery. The optical lens system consists of 11 elements in nine groups and includes two aspheric lenses, a construction that adds up to sharp, high-quality images. The DiMAGE Z20 combines a 5.0-megapixel primary-color CCD with proprietary CxProcess" III image processing technology for pictures that are exactly the way you see them.

The DiMAGE Z20's Rapid AF combines a passive AF sensor with the video AF system, giving a fast focusing time of approximately 0.3 second in both the wide-angle and telephoto positions. The Rapid AF also has Predictive Focus Control, which predicts where a moving subject is heading and focuses accordingly. To round out the list of quick-response features, the DiMAGE Z20 has the fastest startup in its class (approx. 0.5 sec.), a short shutter-release time lag, and continuous shooting. Now you can be stress free amid all the excitement when you capture those decisive moments during sports events or other continuous action.

Not only is the DiMAGE Z20 a sprinter with its fast startup; it's also a marathon champ with power efficiency that allows you to take up to approximately 450 frames with the four included AA alkaline batteries. This is more shots than any other digital camera in its class.

The DiMAGE Z20 has a Macro mode that allows you to bring the lens as close as 1 cm from the subject. Capture the smallest subjects-flowers, insects, or jewelry-with the greatest detail.

In addition to all its still shooting features, the DiMAGE Z20 can also take high-quality movie clips in VGA (640x480) size.

Despite its large 8X optical zoom, the DiMAGE Z20 weighs just approximately 300 g. Its ergonomic form gives you a steady grip while its intuitive control button layout allows even camera novices to be up and enjoying digital photography in no time at all.

    After searching and doing a lot of research for a new digital camera that wouldn't break the bank, I settled on this one.
    The camera is excellent and all the features are as listed. There was no embellishments whatsoever.
    I am new to decent spec digital cameras (my other is a 1 megapixel) and have to say that it is so easy to use, whether it be in the fully automatic mode, or where I can choose my own exposure etc.
    There are also some useful features such as black and white, sepia and bright colour, which give good effects without using filters. The transfer method to a PC is good, although I do have 2 small problems:The memory card deletes as it is transferring files if I want to put pictures on a few comuters, then I need to make a copy from my main computer; and as I bought the camera in Germany, the instruction manual is in German, there is a CD with the English manual, but I prefer books rather than lugging my laptop around, so a new manual cost me an extra £10
    On the whole an excellent camera at an excellent price.

    Having bought a Z20 in June, in July I put it through its paces while on pilgrimage in Spain. All round, a good performance that enabled me to take pictures that were far better than I'd expected. All of the automatic settings can be overridden, which can be useful; the main niggle I have with it is that the flash can be quite fearsome, and the auto-flash setting resets whenever the camera is switched off, which can be annoying. The 36-290mm lens offers lots of flexibility, and the macro feature gives excellent results.

    Like an earlier reviewer, I bought the camera outside the UK, but it still came with an English manual in addition to local language (Czech).

    All round and by, excellent value for a camera that will suit those who want more than a compact, while not being expert enough to find it worth splashing out on an expensive digital SLR.
