2.0 out of 5 stars Check if it's really right for your business before you buy..., 5 Feb 2007
By Limeshirt (Leicester, UK) - See all my reviews
I've operated as a sole trader for nearly five years and, being reasonably numerate, decided to start doing my own accounts last year. To be fair, the main factor in choosing this product was the price, but the reviews I read seemed to suggest that it would be ideal for my needs. However, I have decided to stop using MYOB for a number of reasons:
1 It does not allow input in any other currency than sterling (unless you buy the most expensive, full payroll version). (Adding insult to injury, my version displays the Euro symbol instead of the pound symbol on all reports - rendering them fairly useless if they need to be shown to anyone in a professional context.) Yes, you can do the conversions yourself, but if you're going to do that, you might as well just set up a spreadsheet...
2 ...which it would probably take the same amount of time to do as it would to get a comprehensive set of accounts set up on BusinessBasics. The manual is patchy in it's helpfulness; it's not much help on guiding you through the form your accounts should be in.
3 30 days free support is not enough unless you have time to sit down for a couple of days solidly to get to grips with it (see next point); difficult if you're a sole trader.
4 If you've never done your own accounts before, you will need a certain amount of book keeping and self-assessment knowledge to get started.
5 In general, the interface is clunky and inconsistent, especially when it comes to editing data.
7 I would agree with the reviewer who said it was better for goods rather than services; it's not great with a variety of payment terms either.
8 If you want the reports the software generates to be in any style other than the standard one, you have to change all the layout options yourself every time; you can't save a template.
I'm sure it is ideal for certain types of business, but if you know a bit about spreadsheets and not much about book-keeping, it will take roughly the same time to do a (probably free) workshop from Business Link or HMRC and set something up yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent software for small business, 4 May 2005
By George (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
I really can recommend this software to anyone who wants to be able to do their accounts in an easier way than excel (or paper if you still use that). I have 2 areas of my business which my accountant has recommended I keep accounts for seperately and effectively run as 2 seperate businesses - this software allows me to do that at no extra cost which is excellent and my accountant loves it! I used the 30 day free support line to help me set it up and they talked me through how to get my excel files on, really helpful - based in the UK for a change - very good.

I bought this because someone recommended it to me - its excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value for small business, 25 May 2005
By A Customer
As a small company it is important that we get value for money on purchases, so we were pleasantly surprised when we were told about MYOB Business Basics, it has really helped us make the transition we needed in our accounting practices and doesn't cost a bomb.
In particular, we like the fact that it lets us download our bank statements and automatically reconciles matching incomings/outgoings, saves us a lot of time! Another good feature for us is the Audit tracker, as a small company we all add things into accounts but this way we can see who's made the different changes and it stops a lot of confusion.
We've not had any problems getting the software to work, which was big relief as we just don't have time to spend hours trying to figure these things out! The wizards are great as guide you through things and so far (touch wood) we haven't needed any other support.
All in all we're really pleased with software; it's been v. useful in bringing us up to date with rest of world, without having to get a dedicated book keeper, and not having to juggle Excel spreadsheets any more is making us all happier!
