Product Description

Product Description

Following on from his highly acclaimed debut Len Parrott's Memorial Lift, Baxter proves that this was no fluke. His new album Floor Show sounds like it was recorded in St Paul's Cathedral, with vocals added in the whispering gallery. Narratively, it's seems to be about a disintegrating relationship, although this is no confession booth moment. Guitars float like ectoplasm, Wurlitzer's spin beneath mirror balls, summoning the presence of spectral beings, swaying to luxurious, narcotic music that predates trip-hop by a good sixty years. Stand-out tracks include the single "Lisa Said", "Cocaine Man" and the wonderful "Francesca's Party". The album was produced by Baxter, Nick Terry and mixed by Craig Silvey (The Coral, Magic Numbers) in West London in the winter of 2004 / 2005. The band are Damon Reece on drums and Mike Mooney on the electric guitar- both former members of Spiritualized.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hit me with your tickling stick, 28 Aug 2005
By J. B. Boulter "boulter25" (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Baxter (son of the late great Ian) has created a modern character study of an album that cynically critiques the modern worthlessness of the over privileged twenty something, bar dwelling, flare jeaned wearing, malboro light smoking type who live in places like Shoreditch. And he does it very well. Opener: Francesca's Party seems to be targeting spoilt daddy's girls the world over, and their "cool" associations they have with drug culture- essentially a fashion statement for them. It has a fantastic duel vocal and an excellent chorus. Cocaine Man continues with the drug theme more obviously- strating with a Parklifeesque opening spoken monologue getting into the head of your typical recreational coke user. Many of the other tracks are also firmly located in this post club world of white lines and self indulgent conversations. Sister, Sister has a well judged Bowie homage and all the songs have an eerie almost gothic (don't worry though- this is no Marilyn Manson) sound.

A well produced album, the clear theme being that you come down at the end of the night and evrything isn't quite as sparkiling as it looked when you had the first line of the night.
