DVD Description

A WAY OF LIFE centres on teenage mother Leigh-Anne Williams (Stephanie James); her brother Gavin (Nathan Jones), a seventeen year old desperately chasing love, and her two friends Robbie (Gary Sheppeard), a seventeen year old determined to move beyond his dead-end community and Stephen (Dean Wong), a fifteen year old yearning for a Welse identity. All of them function along the margins of society...until one day, paranoid, boredom, frustration and anger form a lethal combination. When her baby girl's future appears threatened, Leigh-Anne's Turkish Muslim neighbour becomes the target of pent up anger and humiliation. A ferocious murder takes place which is seemingly driven by racial hatred and in a moment, the four teenagers seal their fate.

A violent yet powerful story of a young mother and her child, of teenage romance and friendship. A WAY OF LIFE draws you into a world of poverty, love, tenderness and hurt...a world which will challenge the way you look at life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just a bit of balance, 12 Aug 2007
By B. S. Barker "brendanbe" (England) - See all my reviews

I had to write after reading the above review.
Ok. It may not be the greatest film EVER made but it has it's good points and I felt it was well filmed. The performances from the, mostly, youthful cast were good. It was gritty, realistic and held the attention.
I don't know if the other reviewer has had a bad experience in Wales.
It's a beautiful country but it's not without it's problems...like anywhere else in the U.K and I thought the film portrayed these problems well.
I think this film is worth a look but they show it TV now and again so maybe wait until it comes around then and at least give it a chance.
We sat through Mike Leighs 'All or Nothing' last night and I was really dissapointed as I usually like his films and I would say that 'A way of life' was much better than that

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst movie ever, 31 Jul 2007
Worst film ever!
Infamously, this pathetic effort made £15,000 at the box office. The audience voted with their feet, which makes it even more incredible that the dolts at BAFTA gave the director a best newcomer award. The whole industry obviously has a death wish. Yes, they truly know nothing.
This miserable excuse for a movie makes `Rescued by Rover' look like a masterpiece by Kurasawa. In fact, Rescued by Rover, made in 1905, is superior in every department. The story in `Way of Life' is clunky and contrived, the script execrable, the acting pitiful, the photography uninspired. The only people who like this movie are academics and people at the BFI, who live on handouts.
It tells the story of a bunch of yobs who carry out a racist attack. Why would anyone would want to stay in watch this miseryfest? It's set in Wales, and the Welsh must be wondering why a black south Londoner hates their country so much.
I was one of the poor sods who paid to see `Way of Life', and that's the last time I go to a support British cinema, which appears to be a motley bunch of talentless no-hopers chasing arts council grants.
When you think of all the great British movies and talent in the past and then you compare them with Way of Life, the only conclusion is that everyone who works in film now should pack up and go home.
Don't buy it, hire it or try it unless you want inspiration to commit suicide.
NO STARS - I've had to giver it one as there's no zero.
PS In answer to 'A bit of Balance' review. Fair enough. I jused to think it was just me. But since this film took only 15 grand at the box office, it plainly isn't. NO ONE went to see it! British films now go for issues rather than stories. Beware - British film'll go the way of modern British theatre, and fewer and fewer can be bothered with that these days.

4.0 out of 5 stars well worth watching, 24 Aug 2007
By A. D. Whitting (Cornwall) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I felt i needed to write a review to contradict the first review , I found the film both moving and powerfully written , its an uncompromising look at life in a rural (and forgotten) village in a welsh valley where poverty and unemployment runs rife , its hard hitting and uncomfotable to watch at times due to the undercurrent of racial prejudics'I certainlly disagree with the gentleman whom said it was poorly acted I found the young cast compelling to watch especially stephanie james who throughout the film sinks into paranoia and dispair trying to protect her child from the social services and the hopelessness of life in her home town.

In summing up this film is well worth a visit , I'm not a 'luvvy' of english cinema! in fact i feel a lot of what is produced in this country is a load of sentimental tosh , however this film is not , if you want a moving and powerful film about the hardships and intolerance in impoverished welsh village watch this , if however you want some pathetic attempt at a comedy where the actors are the typical sterotypes watch four weddings and a funeral or notting hill ,I know which i would prefer.
