they don't have parties like this in real life, 6 Sep 2005
Well, i waited a long time for this to be released on dvd, my vhs copy is celebrating retirement as we speak. The sypnosis pretty much tells you what the film's about. Larry(perry fenwick pretends to be ill on new years eve as his presents go out to celebrate so they have a secret party of their own. Theres an array of different characters who come to the party that mirror people we met in our early twenties, theres johnny(karl howman) whos a charmer with the ladies and toby(daniel peacock) who clearly isnt, who somehow reminds me of me in a similar predicament. If you havent see this before, imagine quadrophenia without the mods and rockers and both represent an image of working class life, when you're growing up meeting people like hardnut bobby(clive mantle) whos clearly unwanted at the party but whos willing to argue. Theres some great lines, daniel peacock co wrote this but his failures with chatting women up with johnnys tips display much charm and great side splitting moments. I'm surprised this film is not universally acclaimed but its special for me, ive always hoped a party like this would exist, i havent been to one like it yet. The soundtrack is great, even bananarama doing "no feelings" by the sex pistols is a nice surprise though i bought the lp around the time it came out. It was a great time for music which is reflected in the spirit of the film. Theres many recognisable faces like the ones i mentioned earlier e.g caroline quentin who when she appeared on men behaving badly, i remembered her from this film but great cast, great lines, everything dates as it was made 23 yrs old so maybe one for 30 yrs old and above but it still has a special place for me. I gave 4 stars because theres no extras, no featurette even as i wouldve like to hear what the cast's memories were as theres not much on record but well worth purchasing as its very entertaining and who knows there may be a collectors edition one day with a commentary but i live in hope, do enjoy it, i certainly have john
