5.0 out of 5 stars Pure, unrestrained electric blues, 13 Sep 2005
By S. Roberts (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For anyone unfamiliar with Free, do not let Mr Howell's review discolour your first impression. For those who are familiar with Free, you will understand how it is misguided. You should also appreciate that holding bands to the standards of Led Zeppelin could leave you looking down your nose at, well, just about everything else.

All Right Now is an excellent example of blues-rock songwriting. Paul Kossoff was the master of phrasing, and never overplayed. The tone he gets through his Les Paul is without a doubt second to none. This song still truly rocks, and never fails to get your foot tapping. Viewed by some as Free's only notable song, a number of other tracks are unwisely overlooked. Walk In My Shadow, The Hunter, The Stealer, I'm A Mover, and Wishing Well all have excellent drives, powered by Kossoff's guitar and Fraser's bass.

Certainly, Free have numerable slower numbers, but these are in their own raw way, perfect. I'll Be Creepin', Fire and Water, Mr Big, Heavy Load, and Heartbreaker are all brilliant. On all of these tracks, Paul Rodgers shows why those who are familiar with Free recognise his voice as one of the finest in the history of rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best band on the planet - ever!!!!, 5 Oct 2006
Mr Howells - you claim to write for a publication called Blues Matters. Unbelievable! If it really "mattered" to you then you wouldn't have written such a dire review of a band that are clearly head and shoulders above anyone in the blues/rock genre. And that includes Led Zep, Cream and dare I say even the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Free are amazing because they so play so well as a unit - they leave open spaces in their work which means you hear every instrument clearly behind Paul Rogers vocals. Kossoff was a wonderful guitar player, Kirke a passionate drummer and Fraser's bass playing simply sublime. Just listen to him go on 'Mr Big'. And I defy anyone not to be amazed by tracks like 'Oh I Wept' or 'Ride On Pony'. Every song on this album is a killer - but then Free didn't make bad songs. My advice is go and buy their six albums, then the Live At The BBC compilation and then the Songs Of Yesterday box set. You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars EARTH TO MR. HOWELLS, 18 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Never read so much garbage in my life, I'm not a big fan of free but I know talent when I hear it and this group obviously had it. Which is more than can be said of Mr. Howell's talents as a critic, take your own advice and follow Robbie Williams, "blues matters", indeed, this bloke wouldn't know the blues if it jumped up and bit him on the a!*!.
