Pure, unrestrained electric blues, 13 Sep 2005
For anyone unfamiliar with Free, do not let Mr Howell's review discolour your first impression. For those who are familiar with Free, you will understand how it is misguided. You should also appreciate that holding bands to the standards of Led Zeppelin could leave you looking down your nose at, well, just about everything else. All Right Now is an excellent example of blues-rock songwriting. Paul Kossoff was the master of phrasing, and never overplayed. The tone he gets through his Les Paul is without a doubt second to none. This song still truly rocks, and never fails to get your foot tapping. Viewed by some as Free's only notable song, a number of other tracks are unwisely overlooked. Walk In My Shadow, The Hunter, The Stealer, I'm A Mover, and Wishing Well all have excellent drives, powered by Kossoff's guitar and Fraser's bass. Certainly, Free have numerable slower numbers, but these are in their own raw way, perfect. I'll Be Creepin', Fire and Water, Mr Big, Heavy Load, and Heartbreaker are all brilliant. On all of these tracks, Paul Rodgers shows why those who are familiar with Free recognise his voice as one of the finest in the history of rock.
