These six well-filled discs, dating from the mid-1990s, provide an opportunity to acquire all Schubert's piano sonatas (but excluding the Impromptus etc.) at budget price. They do not appear in the Penguin Guide (2008) so are they any good? The answer has to be an almost unqualified yes. We are told that Michael Andres is a Schubert specialist, winning first prize in an International Schubert Competition in Germany. Certainly, there is much intelligent, sensitive playing here and the sound quality is excellent, with a wide dynamic range. Indeed, some listeners may be taken aback by the occasional crashing climax. I have Brendel's early 1970s performances of the mature sonatas on LP for comparison. Andres' tempi are almost identical and, to my mind, his interpretations do not pale in comparison with those of the better-known player. Brendel's versions are, of course, still available (on CD), and are highly rated, but they are more expensive and he does not include the early sonatas. These are rarely heard but are worth having, as they demonstrate Schubert's musical development and are interesting pieces in their own right. Overall then, a highly recommendable value-for-money set.

This is a really good value box set. Not only can one rest satisfied that one is not missing a single sonata, but one will also find the recordings in this set are all of a pretty high quality, and sensitively played. Seriously. Rocked my world.

This almost complete set of Schubert's piano sonatas are played with a peerless touch by Michael Endres. I think the set is better than Brendel & Uchida and most certainly represents better value-for-money. Capriccio is a German label that ran into financial difficulties a few years ago; the label has been saved and some of the back catalogue is being re-released at most attractive prices.

Endres has a sure, clear, but gentle keyboard skill, well-suited to Schubert. The recording, from the 1990s is very good indeed.

The only negative is that the set comprises 4 single and 1 double jewel cases in a flimsy card sleeve rather than the much better "clamshell" boxes as used by Brilliant Classics, amongst others.
