After the triumphs of Sony's revelatory Vivaldi series - three gorgeous CDs of The Four Seasons together with totally unknown works of great distinction - we can now hear the unmistakable sounds of the barrel being scraped.

All is not entirely in decline, however. The Vivaldi concerti still exert the same spell as in the previously mentioned releases (which now include a further five world-premiere Vivaldi concerti from Archiv). The slow movement of the Concerto in Bb for two orchestras is as beguiling as the earlier 'late concerti'. Furthermore, the whole concerto is recorded and played with just as much finesse. The hugely detailed bass sound resonates just as impressively here as elsewhere - the final chord reverberates for ever! Likewise, the Concerto in e - another work whose slow movement is full of mystery, charm and delicious discords.

My main problem lies with the 'supporting works' - particularly that by Locatelli. Pietro Locatelli is sometimes called the eighteenth century Paganini. And for good reason. His music can be full of the same kind of tedious and empty virtuosity. If Carmignola and Marcon can't bring this music to life, no-one can. Fortunately, the Tartini concerto is a more musical and engaging work.

If you're as committed a Vivaldi devotee as I am, it may be worth buying this CD just for the merits of the first two pieces. If not, disappointment may ensue - especially if you've been captivated by the Carmignola/Marcon combination before. As a whole, this one does not reach the same heights as the others.
