4.0 out of 5 stars Soulfull cracker., 27 Dec 2005
By A. Bulger "al_co_pop" (Liverpool, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I don't know what prompted me to first purchase this when I did, but I'm glad I did. It has featured heavilly in my cd player ever since i bought it. It's more soul than gospel, but you can easily hear the gospel influences that is now apparent in a lot of popular music.
The first two tracks are among my favourites. 'Sometimes I feel like a motherless child' is one funky ditty, which is quite possibly about a lack of guidence and regret. Deep lyrics combined with funky guitar riffs and beats, a combination not too often heard. In my ascent to heaven or my descent to hell, I want this to be playing.
The Second track 'Inbetween tears' is also in the meaningfull lyric mould. It paints a very vivid picture with it's words about an argument between the singer and her lover and her unconditional love for him; the opening lines are, 'I love you for what you are, wrong or right...'. It is also very funky but in a more Motown sort of way.
Among the other great tracks is 'Neon Lightening', a track that builds up to one cracker of a chorus, which is very Gospel and uplifting. Bill Wither's 'Grandma's hands' is taken further back to it's Gospel roots, fitting in with it's lyrical content. It features a funky rendition of 'Amazing Grace' stamped on the end to further the songs journey.
The opening lines of Mavis Staples 'Trippin on your love' are among the best ever sung, and deserve a couple of playbacks, the rest of the track is killed somewhat my too much synth where real violin stings would have been better. 'I don't need no speed or weed...' she soothely churns out.
These are among some of the treasures I have found since purchasing this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt music with the power to move, 31 Aug 2008
By Mr. S. Bailey - See all my reviews

Another interesting and attractive collection from the excellent Soul Jazz label. The prosaic title - Soul Gospel - provides an accurate summary of this album's contents. Compiler David Hill has managed to unearth an array of recordings which meet sleeve note writer Chris Menist's definition of gospel as music with a "heartfelt, guttural delivery [which] has... the power to move". These gems, which range across the decades, include Aretha Franklin's funky 'Lee Cross' from 1965, the haunted 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child' from 1973, by Clarence Smith, and Jessy Dixon's soulful 'Love Lifted Me' which was released in 1980.

4.0 out of 5 stars Usual excellent standard, 7 Jan 2010
By Richard Preston "rapcadiz" (Cadiz) - See all my reviews

I bought this mainly for the Staple Singers' "Trippin' on your love", but as usual with Soul Jazz the quality is top drawer. I'm enjoying Odetta, as well as Della Reese's "Compared to what". Recommended for those who know what to expect from the Soul Jazz label - it won't let you down.
