3.0 out of 5 stars There's something missing ..., 3 Aug 2007
Sometimes transcriptions of orchestral works provide new, satisfying ways of hearing otherwise familiar scores. This is certainly the case with, for example, Webern's piano quintet transcription of Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony, Op. 9, Schoenberg's transcription of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, or Erwin Stein's transcription of Mahler's Fourth.

Mahler's chamber-music like textures lend themselves to miniaturization. The scores of Shostakovich, whose own similarly spare textures owed much to Mahler, seem likewise to lend themselves to renditions for chamber ensembles.

If this is the case, at least in principle, this Viktor Derevianko's arrangement of Shostakovich's Fifteenth nevertheless fails to live up to that promise. Part of the problem lies with the composition of the ensemble: the Fifteenth relies too much on a wide range of woodwind and brass timbres. To suppress these colors in order to accommodate a piano quintet with added percussion is too great a loss.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the openings of the second and fourth movements, in both of which the piano takes on the brass parts. While the Kremerata Baltica's pianist approaches these passages delicately, as is appropriate to the instrument, the scoring deprives the listener of the timbral associations of the original. This is egregious in the last movement where Shostakovich's opening references to the "Fate" motive from _Der Ring des Nibelungen_ even replicated the timbre with which Wagner usually associated this motive.
