Game play wise, ESPN NHL 2K5 is simply the closest to real hockey you will find on any format. SEGA have got so many things right with this game it is astounding. The presentation of the game has always been good with the 2K franchise and the same applies here. There are also a wealth of different modes to play, which will satisfy most, if not every, hardcore hockey nut. The franchise mode is the most impressive, as it enables you to feel very in-control over your team, but doesn't lumber you with innane tasks such as setting ticket prices and so on. Other modes include Tournaments, International included, Season, Play-offs, Pick-up, Party Mode, and also Skills Competitions. There are also loads of unlockables to collect such as classic teams, jerseys, logos etc...

Where this game really shines is the gameplay. It's incredibly smooth, which excellent graphics and very lifelike sounds. There are loads of ways to score goals, the goalies are intelligent and tough to beat and the one-time passing is a God-send. Also, once you get the hang of dishing out big hits they will bring a smile to your face. The CPU AI gets very tough and very hard to break down once you start playing on the harder levels, but if you put in a decent amount of time the joy of finally getting the better of it is very satisfying.

This is a thoroughly recommended game, especially if you like your hockey true to way it really looks and is really played.
