5.0 out of 5 stars You will lose your life to this game, 25 Sep 2006
By Chris Conroy-smith (Oxfordshire, England) - See all my reviews

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
When I first played this game I tried to play it like the normal shoot 'em up games. Oh how wrong my approach was!! This is an unbelievably hard but addictive game, no longer can you just run around killing everything, you now have to be sneaky, and actually think about your position, you start to wonder if you really should shoot at that bloke 300m away as if I miss how many of his friends are going to get a fix on my position and obliterate me. This game is also the most realisatic game I have ever played, no more health packs etc, infact you will quite often be killed by a single shot from someone who was hiding in a bush and if you can live to the end of the mission and get maybe 3 kills you will feel like a god.
Another massive part of this game is teamwork, in the time I have been playing I have only ever heard nasty abuse on the chat lines by 2 people, every other person has been more than helpfull and friendly, the reason being everyone knows how hard it is to start, however the empthasis will be on you to start asking questions and if you join a squad you will make some very good gaming friends.
The devlopers have managed to create a very inclusive feel to the game, they are always releasing new updates to improve the game and release a bi-weekly newsletter which you are actively encouraged to writer into to suggest new ideas for the game, it is a fantastic game community.
On the game side of things the sound is brilliant as you get more experienced you will be able to differentiate between the engines sounds of the vehicles, the type of gun shooting at you, the sound really is excellent. I use a 5.1 surround sound and can tell where people are relative to me and how far away they are.
The graphics have just had a major overhaul, the game now has random weather, many different types of tree and 3D bush to hide in, the actuall weapons tanks, planes and soldiers are very well animated, however the devlopers are still intending to improve it.
The game world is huge you can literally drive, walk, sail or fly for hundreds of miles if you wanted to. The buildings are reasonably destructable and you really get the feel of what it was like to be in europe in a shelled out town.
I realise this is a long review and I havent really touched the surface of how good this game is. There are negatives such as the frustration level of being constantly killed (although this stops when you stop treating the game like other shoot 'em ups and hide or become tactical about what your doing instead), however the positives of this game are measured in the hundreds. The sheer size, amount of different weapons available, the random nature of the game i.e. your playing against other people who all have different ideas and tactics, the comaradery between players all add up to make a game that if you give it a go long enough to learn how to play it, will become the only game you play.
Have a look at www.battlegroundeurope.com to view the actual game website or try www.bravotwozerocompany.co.uk which is a web site set up by a few guys from the squad I'm in.
P.S. dont buy this game if your under 10yrs old as I dont think you will have the patience to play it, DO buy this game if you want a challenge where you have use your brain.

4.0 out of 5 stars hate it, love it, hate it, love it - mainly like it, 18 Feb 2006

Being a COD player I found this game very difficult at first. I normally run around like a headless chicken blasting away. This game is different - normally you get hit once a die! The first thing you will notice are the graphics - not brilliant but this is because of the size of the battle arena and the number of people playing. You will need to learn some discipline and learn how to fight using your buddies around you for help and support. The more you play the more you get used to it. Other players on line are helpful and there are some huge battles to take part in. As you get better, you gain rank which means you get access to different weapons, vehicles, aircraft and ships. This game can be amazing to play especially if there is a big battle ensuing but it can get annoying if you gave travelled 15 minutes to a battle then get shot! My opinion - play it and give it a chance - i hated it at first but now really enjoy it for the main part.

5.0 out of 5 stars A class of its own, 14 Mar 2006
By A Customer
I am two weeks into this game and have just managed to rise above the rank of recruit. Dammit I EARNED my stripe, I sweated for it, I fought and died many many times for it.

This may well be the last game I buy, nothing else comes close. This is now little short of an obsession for me. The depth is nothing short of astounding. The learning WALL is enormous, the frustration often incredible, but the reward for making the attempt is palpable, it feels real.

You CAN go it alone, and often that is rewarding. On the other hand when you slipped and flitted through the bushes for an HOUR to get the perfect position and an enemy sniper picks you off...nuff said. So I'd suggest you find yourself a squad and learn how to survive. The teamwork in this game is without parallel anywhere and most players will go out of their way to help because they all remember just how hard it was. And remember every resource you use in this game is precious so use it wisely. If you don't know something, ask, trust me you'll get a barrow full of replies.

You can spend days at a time researching background material prepared by the community supporting this game (to be honest thats just as well because the supplied manual just sucks) and you won't have scratched the surface.

Hint> If you play allied and like to fly, the Dewoitine (French) is the entry level plane of choice, its the only allied plane at that level with cannon, and believe me you're gonna need it!

Bottom Line: This game is hard core, and its for grown ups only.
