From the front cover of this set, you might assume that it is a re-issue of the DCC's 1950s mono take on "The Sorcerer." It is certainly that. The cast is the rump company that soldiered on after the defection of Martyn Greene and his allies. The lead comedian is Peter Pratt, who is perfectly satisfactory as John Wellington Wells.

Now, to the ultra-refined taste of some G&S fans, the fact that Pratt and Compnay had not yet performed "The Sorcerer" on stage remains an irremovable stain on this performance. Those fans, of course, are wholly out of their minds.

The real value in this Naxos set, however, comes from the filler. If memory serves me right, "The Sorcerer" was the final issue of the DCC's electronic recordings of the 1930s. It was never recorded in full, but half or more of the score is here. The J. W. Wells of the earlier cast is the still-youthful George Baker. He is tremendous--simply a full notch over Pratt. The rest of the earlier cast, for once, lives up to its reputation of outshining the cast of the 1950s. (For what it's worth, they hadn't performed the piece on stage, iether.)

The remastered sound of the two "Sorcerers" is instructive. If I had not known their relative ages, I'd have assumed that they were both performances from the 50s offered by rival companies.

This is a bargain offering which should should be snapped up by any G&S fan.
