WOW Factor 10, 22 Mar 2005
Received my H10 from Amazon Febuary 2005. Incredible sounding (way better than iPod) and stylish (way better than anything else frankly). There is no doubt that iRiver are designing their new babies to work best in conjunction with their own software. No big deal if you don't mind another new audio tool of course, certainly a pain for all you Microsoft-only weenies out there. Rest assured though iRiver have put much thought into their own offering (iRiver Plus), I'm already hooked on it's ability to accurately update my MP3 & WMA tags via FreeDB (lighting fast over broadband). As for the player itself, I immediately upgraded the supplied Sennheiser headphones with white Sony Fonotopia's (although this was admittedly personal preference in terms of comfort). There are 30 on-board EQ settings on the player, but the SRS WOW setting on the H10 it has to be said is a major coup for iRiver ... it is absolutely breathtaking, true pocket hifi from an MP3 player at last! (praise d'Lord!). Pre-supplied case (although like a WW2 condom) is stylish and offers great protection. Great (replaceable) battery (take note other manufacturers!!) and overall controls are simple and very effective. I've loaded a few pics of my family onto the player, the photo viewer is a nice touch. Why people criticise portable media players for their lack of quality in this space is beyond me. It's a 2x2 colour LCD screen, get a life (or at least a wallet!). Radio sounds excellent, voice recorder works well as does text viewer. I am highly impressed thus far with my H10. It wasn't the cheapest option certainly, but in terms of build and output quality it leaves everthing else in this space for dead (sorry Mr Apple, you have some catching up to do). Highly recommended.
