Product Description

Synopsis
A remake of the Japanese horror hit JU-ON (widely considered to be one of the scariest movies ever made), THE GRUDGE is helmed by its original director Takeshi Shimizu. Like its predecessor, this Hollywood version of the film takes place in Tokyo, but most of the main characters are American, including Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER), a young social worker, and her peers. When Karen enters a seemingly abandoned home to look after a mentally disturbed resident, she soon discovers that there's an evil - and very aggressive - presence in the house, and it's lashing out at every person that sets foot inside. Having directed both the original JU-ON and its sequel in Japan, Shimizu was very familiar with his own tale of terror by the time he directed its 2004 incarnation. Using many of the key actors from the previous films (including Takako Fuji and Yuya Ozeki who have unforgettable roles), Shimizu recreates the story with the added advantage of a Hollywood budget (acquired with the help of producer Sam Raimi of SPIDER-MAN fame, who is also a noted horror-movie director). As with many Japanese horror films (particularly the original RING, which strongly influences this movie), THE GRUDGE relies on atmosphere over plot, resulting a series of utterly chilling moments that will leave viewers fascinated and unbelievably frightened.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but nowhere near scary., 23 Feb 2006
If you have never seen this film before, do not listen to anyone on here that claims this is in any way a scary film. They are wrong. If you did see this film, and you found it scary. may I advise that you watch either the original Ju-On film(s) which are actually quite scary, or a flipping Disney film which will hopefully be more calming for you. This film is not scary. Whereas films like Ring (and even The Ring) and Ju-On have successfully gone for the more psychological effects, The Grudge decided to simply throw lots of loud noises and gory faces into the mix to get its thrills. I'm not saying that makes it a bad film, because it doesn't. But it's never scary, it's just shocking. There's a huge difference, people. Also, Sarah Michelle Gellar is hopeless. Why she was cast, i'll never know. Naomi Watts in The Ring worked, because she is a good actress and also because barely anyone young knew who she was. Sarah Michelle Gellar spent years playing Buffy, and she never does anything to make us forget that fact and appreciate her character in the film. Therefore, she is impossible to take seriously. Also, she's terribly wooden and has no range in this film. She's nothing but eye candy (admittedly, very nice eye candy, but I would prefer an actress).

The resulting movie is entertaining enough for me to own and watch now and again, but can never live up to Ju-On, or even The Ring. In short, you will never have nightmares about this film.

Bye.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOULUTELY SCARY, 12 Mar 2005
When i first saw this film, i was by myself with the lights off and the curtains and blinds closed! I watched it all the way through! I couldnt get up and stop it because it was the best horror movie i have seen yet. Although some of it gets confusing because there is the past and present.

Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar- Buffy, Scooby-Doo), an american nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a supernatural curse, a one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim!

I would give this film 5 stars because of the scary effectiveness and sound effects with the Grudge's voice. Some of you may agree with me that this is the best thriller since 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and 'Scream Trilogy'. Thankyou for reading this. Make sure you like scary movies and dont get nightmares (definetly) or you will not be going to sleep for a while!

5.0 out of 5 stars outrageously scary - beware!, 15 Jul 2005
Do not watch this unless you want to be scared out of your mind. It may not occur to you at first, but the spirit of the grudge will haunt you forever and curse the life ahead of you. For every little thing will creep you out, for fear of some "thing" creeping about. An admirably powerful horror movie, though a part of you may wish it weren't so.
