Great Stuff But Do We Need This CD?, 11 Feb 2005
For the second year in a row, we get a compilation CD from Chris Rice. This one starts off with six tracks from various live performances. I must admit I really enjoyed the slightly different take on some classic Chris Rice songs. "Deep Enough to Dream" is especially enjoyable in this setting. Up next are three songs from non-Chris Rice records. "Billy Joe McGuffrey" originated on the soundtrack for Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie. "Calling out Your Name" was originally on the tribute to Rich Mullins. Finally, "Nothin'" comes from Exodus. I am thrilled to have these songs on a Chris Rice CD. Lastly, we get some fan favorites directly from their original recording, like any best of. What's interesting to me is the inclusion of two songs from his Living Room Sessions projects, two CD's that got passed over in his best of last year. Don't get me wrong, I love Chris's music. My disappointment is that there is really little new here for fans. While I enjoy best of's, we just had one last year. It's been two years since we had anything new from Chris, and I'm more then ready for it. This CD would have been great in another few years with another project or two under his belt. I would even feel differently if it were cheaper. But released like this, it feels more like a marketing ploy then anything else. If you aren't familiar with Chris's music, this would be a great place to start. I just love it. But die hard fans will want to consider if they really want to add this to their collection.
