A design classic, the i.DAB ONE digital radio is striking, elegant and with its curvaceous, white gloss finish it will sit comfortably in the kitchen, lounge or bedroom of any modern home. This portable radio is relatively light weight, has a carrying handle, telescopic aerial and the option of being battery powered so can be taken almost anywhere.

Operating the radio is easy; the relatively large screen and the simple and easy-to-use menu structure allows you to navigate around the different features and offers a pleasurable user experience. The backlit, high resolution screen can display a choice of the station name, scrolling broadcast information about the song title & artist and station information with details about the station being listened to.

Switching between DAB, FM & MP3 player is easy via the clearly marked menu button and shown on the high resolution display. When the radio is first switched on it will autoscan for all of the available DAB stations and remember them for you to choose from. FM also has a scanning feature to find the next station in the frequency band.

The radio features a large display clock which is automatically set from the DAB broadcast as well as an alarm to wake you up to your choice of selected DAB station, FM station, and MP3 track or just by a simple but effective buzzer.

The two 5-Watt stereo speakers offer great quality of sound or use the ‘Aux out’ function to play through your favourite speakers or for personal pleasure, use your best headphones.

DAB provides a wider choice of stations to listen to around the country as well as being easier to search and select stations. Additionally DAB offers distortion free reception, a superior quality of sound and is very much the future of radio.

    Don't get me wrong. I love XFM and I like the look and feel of this radio. Out of the box, I was initially very impressed with the build and sound quality (on FM radio and MP3 at least). Unfortunately, I was later to discover 3 problems, at least two of them major:

    PROBLEM 1:
    Don't buy one of these if, like me, you need it to run off batteries (I wanted this radio for the bathroom)
    There appears to be a fairly major design fault:
    Even if you leave it TURNED OFF and with the backlight also TURNED OFF (if you can manage it - see below!), the batteries drain completely in a matter of a few days (1 day in the case of market stall batteries, 3 days in the case of Philips Powerlife batteries). In other words, to save the batteries, you would need to completey remove them after every use (that's 5 large D-cells, by the way). I've tried new batteries, and I've even been given a replacement radio. Same thing.
    I reported this direct to the manufacturer, who were no help at all. I quote their reply (one of many): "What I would suggest is to use the power lead whenever possible and use the batteries only when necessary.". Great. Thanks.

    PROBLEM 2:
    I was unable to recieve DAB anywhere in my house. I also tried it in Central London where I work, at a friends house in North London, and at my in-laws' house in Danbury (apparently where my local DAB transmitter is sited). Still no decent DAB signal. Having tried two xfm radios, I've now replaced it with one made by Roberts. Although still not perfect, I at least get great reception in the bathroom, where the xfm radio failed. Either the xfm is rubbish at DAB, or the Roberts is particularly good.

    PROBLEM 3
    There is a menu option for "Backlight OFF", however it resets to "Backlight ON" after almost any operation you perform! what a waste of time. As mentioned by another reviewer, there's no backlight timeout, so you'll either have to live with it being on all the time, or go through the menu every time you use it.

    Hey All,

    Firstly, let me start by saying how well packaged this items is - this, for £39.99 makes an ideal gift and has the presentation of something worth much more.

    The item is just the right size to pack a nice punch and the build quality is great.

    THERE IS a carry handle built into the unit (its discreetly hidden) ~ the unit as a whole is well designed.

    I've not tested the battery life - so I can't comment.

    THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT IS THE LINE-IN and LINE-OUT - I've just hooked up my mp3 player direct using a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable which cost about £1.50. I now plan to hook it up to my pc so I can record the DAB broadcasts!

    If you're after a DAB radio - GET THIS, you will not be disapointed... If you're after a travel alarm clock or something for the bathroom... go for something else.

    I hope this review helps you in making a good decision.

    I liked the look of this radio. However I wanted it for the bathroom and intended to run it on batteries. However it chews through 5 large D cells in 5-6 hours making it uneconomic to run.

    Moved it to the kitchen where it is now mains powered. Sound quality is good, it has a decent set of speakers. DAB reception is good as well. It also has a nice backlit display that displays plenty of information.

    I would have preferred a volume wheel. You adjust the volume using up down buttons which makes it difficult to set the volume just right.

    Overall not a bad looking and sounding radio, but don't buy it if you are expecting to run it on batteries.
