Product Description

Album Description

The debut release from Finders Keepers Records, we present the seminal 1972 album from Serge Gainsbourg’s right-hand man Jean-Claude Vannier. Recorded during the same sessions as Gainsbourg’s highly acclaimed masterpiece "Melody Nelson" it follows in a similar avant-garde rock-opera vein. "L’Enfant Assasin Des Mouches" (The Child Fly-Killer) is a supernatural tale written by Gainsbourg depicting the journey of the young child travelling through a nightmarish "Fly Kingdom". Vannier narrates the story with sparse music concrete sounds coupled with choirs, funky beats, cowbells, wah-wah guitars and ethnic strings. Comparisons could be made with some of Frank Zappa’s "Hot Rats" material and Alain Goraguer’s creepy "Le Planet Sauvage".

At the time this was released as a promo only in ridiculously small numbers (around 100) and is regarded as the Holy Grail among French psych and prog collectors. Also included on the CD are the obscure funk instrumentals taken from equally rare 7" issued to accompany the T.V drama series "Point D’Interrogation".

Featuring extensive story liner notes including an exclusive pictures of Vannier working with Gainsbourg, as wells an interview with Vannier himself.

Faithfully reproduced packaging, and the vinyl is an exact re-pro deluxe gatefold sleeve and all tracks are beautifully remastered!

Carries a cover mount sticker with personal endorsements from DAVID HOLMES, TIM GAINES (Stereolab), JIM O’ROURKE (Sonic Youth), & JARVIS COCKER (Pulp).

First time on CD and is a fitting first release from Finders Keepers Records, run by Manc-based vinyl-vulture, recording artist and record producer ANDY VOTEL (TWISTED NERVE), fellow B-MUSIC DJ and designer DOMINIC THOMAS and CHERRY RED’s ‘Rare-Disc-Detective’ DOUG SHIPTON.

4.0 out of 5 stars Completely different, 15 Jun 2005

I found this record in the easy listening section of the local record shop. Easy it is not.
The story of the genesis of this truly remarkable album is given at length in the linear notes and makes for fascinating reading - I won't repeat them here.
However, it is the music, and not the back-story, that should make you buy this album.
On first listen Vannier seemed to be throwing every trick he knew into the mix. Overdubs, strange noises, sitars, feedback, swooping strings, unexpectedly repeated phrases. It was all a little too much to take in.
On the second listen it all started to coalesce. I doubt that this will ever be a relaxing listen but it is certainly a very exciting one. Despite repeated listens I am still surprised by the directions in which that Vannier takes the music.
There are definate traces of psych and prog here, with dashes of funk and beat and a very Gallic love of chanson (despite the lack of singing) and drama. However, at no point does any song really sound like anything else you will ever have heard.
And that's what makes it so thrilling!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind bendingly extraordinary, 18 April 2009

The sticker on this CD carries a quote from Jarvis Cocker where he indicates his first hearing of this record made him feel as though he was 'on something' and I can understand why! You've almost certainly never heard anything like this before. Imagine a mash-up between early Pink Floyd, 70s detective show theme tunes and the score to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and I think you'd be getting close. I love it, but some of my friends now look at me with a hint of supsicion after I played it to them...
