A good range of Immediate stuff. The "Mod" label is a bit stretched, obvioulsy the Small Faces and PP Arnold fit in, as do the brilliantly obscure Apostolic Intervention (Small Faces protegees), some of the other stuff is fairly mixed and reflects Immediates output well. Would love to hear more from Apostolic Intervention though - is there a forgotten album in the vaults anywhere??

I agree with the previous reviewer - the Apostolic Intervention insrumental is a fantastic organ workout - the best i have heard for a while - ad this box set is worth paying the £6.00 i paid for it for this track alone. It sounds like an early Booker T track - only better (and that is a pretty high standard). Their cover of the Sall Faces track is less interesting.

I also agree that the 'mod' crdentials of quite a lot of the music here is dubious no matter how far you want to stretch a point. Very few would argue with The Small Faces - all v good tracks although anybody really interested in this kind of music would have all these tracks. PP Arnold is a great late 60s American soul singer - i think she jumped ship from Ike Turner's review. Her brand of sould is pretty funky and every track is a winner - especially Angel Of The Morning which is the best version of this number i think.

I was a little dissapointed with the Chris Farlowe tracks - he sometimes sounds like he is trying too hard although he has got a great voice for soul. See if you can get hold of Buzz With The Fuzz, Stormy Monday and Handbags And Gladrags by Mr Farlowe - all top notch performances but unfortunately not available here.

You have to buy this collection though for three reasons - the aforementioned Apostolic Intervention, the Sonny Burke number - a great organ groover (I think he was with Clarence Wheeler & The Enforcers if you know your funk) and The Jimmy Scott track. This last one was a real suprise for me. The Beatles title is rather unpromising to say the least bit give this a listen. It sounds like an early 70s Tower Of Power or Average White Band recording - not a bad thing in my book - a great track quite a few years ahead of its time.

There are other good mod friendly tracks by the likes of Fleur De Lys, John Mayall and Poets. Also The Mockinbirds provides good pop as does Billy Nixcolls.

A lot of the other stuff did not grab me on the listen I have had so far but there are some other decent records - and some dross.

Good for fans of 60s pop and mods who are getting into this stuff for the first time. For people who have been into this music for years there is probably not a lot of new stuff.
