5.0 out of 5 stars Massive & Reliable, 15 April 2005
By S. Naqvi (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
So it finally came to the time when my hard drive could hold no more. I've always wanted an external hard drive since it's extremely useful as a storage space, but never felt the need until recently. I have a lot of multimedia files that requires a large amount of space, so I was already researching the hard drives. However, I also didn't want to spend a large amount of money since I'm still a student, so I kept around the 100 mark.

After doing a lot of research, it was clear that Maxtor was the leading company in this market. But there were a lot of other makes that sounded interesting and offered similar deals. Still staying around the 100 mark, I found this Western Digital product with a massive 250GB capacity. It's a great deal for the price, and has USB 2.0.

I prompty purchased it and received it quickly. It's simply a matter of plug and play, and works on both Windows and Mac machines. Once I had it going, the transfer rate was steady. 200MB took around 10 seconds to transfer, and that's a good rate for the large files.

So far, I haven't had any problems. You can set the hard drive vertically or horizontally - doesn't matter which way since it doesn't affect performance. It includes a manual and the extra accessories for setting it up in the positions. Along with that is the USB 2.0 cable to plug into your computer and another wire to plug into the mains.

The only problem I can find is for Windows 98 users. You'll have to download from the internet the correct drivers from the Western Digital website and install them since the package doesn't include a CD-ROM. For newer operating systems, it just plugs in and works (on both Windows and Mac, you can switch all the time).

On the whole, it's a great deal for the space you get and works reliably - I haven't had a single problem. Once you have it set up, you'll definitely be using it. As far as I know, Amazon doesn't offer a cheaper hard drive at this capacity making this a great purchase for those who need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value for Money, 15 July 2005
This is cheaper than buying a separate hard drive and enclosure!

It's formatted capacity is actually 232gb and the drive is pre-formatted for Windows using the FAT32 system (with instructions for Mac). That means it's ready to use straight out of the box. Simply plug it in and it's recognised by Windows XP. Instructions for downloading drivers for Windows 98 are provided, as is a UK Technical Support phone number.

However, FAT32 cannot handle files larger than 4gb such as camcorder video files. I therefore had to reformat the drive to NTFS which took 3 1/2 hours! Remember to save the Autorun folder and file as all information is deleted during reformatting.

The drive comes with stands for horizontal and vertical use.

It makes very little noise - just some clicks and whirring which is reassuring as you know that data is being written.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!, 5 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Today the device just died! and all my data with it! after a few months of use.

One simple advise:

If you value your data, don't buy it!

Unfortunately, amazon does not have a "zero" star, otherwise that is what it deserves.
