this dvd documents the life of nat king cole from his humble beginnings to his untimely death.as someone who knew some of the music but nothing at all about the man behind the voice i found this absolutely enthralling.nat truly was a pioneer for african americans during the 40's and 50's and this documentary doesn't shy away from the racism he had to endure,from having shots fired at his house to having to cancel his tv show due to lack of sponsors.the contributors to this are first rate and include his ex-wife,three of his daughters including natalie,tony bennett,eartha kitt,stevie wonder,carlos santana,andre 3000,whoopi goldberg and jools holland not to mention a member of his infamous trio.what comes across is the core decency of the man,his amazing talent and of course his undoubted class.there are no complete performances of nat on this dvd though there are many clips so i have deducted a star but there are plenty of other performance dvds available for that.as a fascinating insight into the man this is fantastic and done with great care and respect for its subject.the extras are enjoyable too.
