Product Description

CD Description

With an aesthetic that veers between hardcore rap, outlaw country, atmospheric film music, and lo-fi indie experimentalism, it seems safe to say that no one makes music quite likeBuck 65. After making a name for himself as a hip-hop performer and impresario in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 1990s (a unique enough feat in itself), Buck 65, also known as Richard Terfry, began releasing albums late in the decade to critical acclaim. THIS RIGHT HERE IS BUCK 65 is a compilation album, the artist's first on the V2 label, that culls highlights from his earlier independent releases.
Ghostly guitars and crying pedal steel are not typical instruments heard among the programmed beats of hip-hop, but there is nothing typical about Buck 65. The music is as unique as his rapping style, which consists of narratives about hardscrabble, low-income life conveyed in a slow, gravel-voiced drawl. Whether spinning tragic community tales ("Cries a Girl", about a teenager who becomes the victim of incest), singing acoustic laments about being a mythological creature ("Centaur"), or pumping party anthems of quirky self-declaration ("Wicked and Weird"), Buck 65 has to be heard to be believed.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the Beginner and Expert, 5 April 2005

"This Right Here Is....Buck 65" is exactly what is says on the tin! If you have ever had the slightest interest in Buck 65 or indeed you enjoy artists such as, Mike Ladd, Sage Franics or Six Too, then you should certainly highly consider buying this album.
"This Right Here Is" is a collection of songs spanning most of his career, you could say that this is the Greatest of Buck. However for the people who already own most of Buck's back catalogue do not be down heartend as all the tracks on this album have been re-recorded with the "Talkin' Honkey Blues" Live Band! So each track contains greater depth and also shows a different side to Bucks amazing and soulfull lyrics. Buck 65 remains one of hip hop's greatest word manipulators and this album shows off his poetic talent to perfection! Good listening for anyone with an ear for words or music!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Place To Start, 1 Aug 2005
Like the review above (or below) mentions, 'This Right Here Is...'. This cd is a good place to start for new fans of Buck 65. It mixes up both older and newer material, creating an album which is a great listen from start to finish.

If you aren't new to Buck then it's still to check it out as the re-recorded older tracks have much better production and the vocals sound a lot better (his voice has progressed tremendously over the years).

My favourite Buck album has to be 'Square', which, much like Prefuse 73's latest album, fuses in and out of songs quickly, but it works very well. 'Talkin' Honky Blues' is a different take on the 'hip-hop' (or hip-not) genre, combining elements of country/western with the genre to create a sound unlike any other. His latest cd, due out tomorrow is another progression of the last album, sounding more like a rock cd than anything else. Apparently hip-hop isn't his thing anymore, shame..

Check out DJ Signify's 'Sleep No More' if you wanna hear Buck 65 and Sage Francis at their best.

1.0 out of 5 stars Revised, Updated.... Ruined., 11 Nov 2005
By Mr. J. Littlejohn (UK) - See all my reviews

All I can say about this LP, is that it is a travesty that it even exists and that anyone thinking of buying it should steer well clear!

Aldous Huxley said of Brave New World, "Resisting the temptation to wallow in artistic remorse, I prefer to leave both well and ill alone", unfortunately Buck 65 didn't subscribe to the same school of thought. This album has been constructed by our man taking the best of his early brilliance, and murdering it with terrible recent style (rasping, country/folk dirge).

If you wan't to hear some mind-bogglingly fantastic hip hop, pick up Buck's early albums such as Vertex and Square. For those who already know those albums, just imagine how horrified you would be to hear such classics as The Centaur or Stella given an ill conceived make-over. This detestable compilation should be wiped from the face of the earth. Truly vile!
