Amazon.co.uk Review
Bumbling cop Washburn (Jimmy Fallon) is a terrible driver who loses his license and so recruits reluctant Belle (Queen Latifah) and her souped-up mega-cab after he stumbles onto a team of supermodel bank robbers. Several klutzy encounters and high-speed car chases ensue. If this sounds to you like the obvious result of a Hollywood pitch session ("Hey, let's pair some guy from Saturday Night Live with a tough-talking African-American and set them after babes on wheels!"), you're right; it doesn't mean, however, that you won't get in a few decent laughs before director Tim (Barbershop) Story's amiable time-killer falls into a steaming pile of would-be blockbuster buddy film cliches. The ever-ingratiating Latifah has long since proved her star charisma, and Fallon does an amusingly offhand parody of failed machismo. They're clearly having a good time together, and you could do worse than their company. There isn't a frame here that isn't cheaply recycled from some other lame action comedy, but if you grit your teeth for the very bumpy ride, you'll come out without too many scratches.--Steve Wiecking

Synopsis
Jimmy Fallon gets his first starring role with TAXI, an action-packed comedy that finds the former Saturday Night Live showman teaming up with Oscar-nominated rapper-turned-actress Queen Latifah (CHICAGO). Fallon is Washburn, a truly pathetic New York City cop who can't seem to wake up in the morning without bumbling busts and breaking whatever he touches. After his most recent debacle, his boss and former flame, Lieutenant Marta Robbins (Jennifer Esposito), revoked his license. Latifah is Belle, a retired bike messenger who is about to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a bona fide cab driver. When Fallon commandeers Belle's services after hearing of a nearby bank robbery, a partnership is formed. Unfortunately, even when he means well, Washburn is nothing but trouble. Against her better judgment, Belle finds herself doing what she can to help out the pitiful Washburn, even though the bank robbers (led by supermodel Gisele Bundchen) are several steps ahead of the game. Produced by Luc Besson, who wrote the 1998 film upon which Tim Story's film is based, TAXI is an engaging romp that features likeable performances from its lead actors, as well as hilarious supporting turns from Ann-Margret and Adrian Martinez.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buckle Up, 25 April 2005
By DL Productions UK (Merseyside, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
When I first heard Taxi by Gérard Pirès was getting a US version I was disguested, I felt that the Americans had gone too far by wanting to rip the French version apart, with a very poor review on many websites and magazines, I felt it was best to not see it at the cinema. Well more fool me!

Taxi is as vibrant as the original, and in some ways better, Daniel replaced with Belle, Emilien - a geeky cop replaced with a dangerous driver cop - and the story less focused on politics against the police, but more of a comical view to policing, and that Taxi's still the lead role!

I felt that Belle was a great character - not stressed like a lot of cabbies can be - but laid back, funny and cool at the same time - and Queen Latifah did a great job! Washburn was as funny as Emilien, but I felt Maria was not as sassy as Petra in the original.

The humor was just as good as the French counterpart, just it was different, see what we find funny in France doesn't always work in the US, but to me Luc Besson did a great job with getting the main funny things about Taxi FR into the US edition.

The stunts were not as good in Taxi US. Yes, they were good, but Taxi FR's were better, there was a lot more action than Taxi US, and the music that went alongside made the speed scenes more exciting (shame they didn't get IAM to do the soundtrack for Taxi NYC).

On the subject of soundtrack, it was good, but could have been better, Taxi was always known in France for bringing some of the best of France's hip hop artists to the forefront, but it looks like this wasn't the case. Not that it's a bad move, I am really pleased to see a director not go with hip hop for his OST, makes a refreshing change.

The villians were very nice - cool to see that supermodels are just as capable to rob a bank as a bunch of German robbers like in the original. It was nice to see that the big roles went to women, nice to see them have powerful roles.

Altogether this is a fine movie, funny, good stunts, enjoyable. I know I have been comparing it with the French version, but it's quite a bit different. The only reason why it didn't get the full five for me is because the copying of some of the French scenes just seems so unimaginative really, specially the jump where the girls get stuck on the bridge. I did however, like the twist, clever writing from Mr Besson! This is definately a good film for the family, there's little drug references, the violence is not overkill and there's not a lot of swearing compared to some of the films I have seen lately. It's very refreshing to see this.

The DVD boasts some cool extras, like the 10mins extra on the extended edition, the CGI featurete, the Comedy Central look at Taxi, the making of, Jimmy's guided tour and the 4 deleted scenes are a welcomed addition.

A must buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny but film lacks speed, 7 Jan 2005
A US remake of the french action-hit but moved from France to New York.

Queen Latifah plays Belle Williams, the maddest, fastest and at times the calmest taxi driver in New York. Jimmy Fallon is Detective Washburn, the cop who has a reputation of severely damaging any car he drives, after finally smashing another car his license is taken from him. Washburn is on the case of the 4 Brazilian robbers (one being Jeniffer Esposito) who have become NYPD's biggest case after robbing a bank in New York. But Washburn is taken off the case leaving him with nothing to do except eating dinner with his Mother, so he sees Williams and jumps in the taxi and for the rest of the film shouts orders causing rows which result in disasters, but they do work together in some way and cleverly work out ways to catch the thieves!

But the film does not move at a steady enough pace, you get caught up in events and lose the plot. If you liked the Fast and Furious films you might like this film, one thing this film has that they dont have is humour, full of gags and good script writing it gives the film that bit more. TAXI, not as good as the originals but a good family film.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only 15% of the original, 1 Sep 2005
I was dubious when I realised Latifah was the main character. On one hand she was OK in "Bone Collector" but on the other hand Hollywood is currently fond of the "Loud mounthed Black Girl" stereotype. In fairness she never goes far enough down that road to be irritating.
If you can't handle movies with subtitles this is a good case for taking special reading classes so you can view the originals. The french movies are quite simply far more funnier, stylish and entertaining. While it is good Hollywood didn't try to make a english language carbon-copy most of the differences aren't that good and the missing bits are very much needed. They keep the same ending to the final chase which is a little boring to those of use who've seen the original. The bicycle opening sequence is different, but not so charming as the scooter race as you see people diving out of the way of the bike. One of the most charming characters of the original was Camile, the cop's mother. Here she is a one-dimensional drunk and it is a pity to see Ann Margret ending up in such a role.
On of the few good original parts is the model searching the female captain but most of what is orginal is not good, and visa versa.
