Synopsis

Directed by Eric Rohmer, TRIPLE AGENT is a 1930s-era thriller that focuses on the activities of a devious Russian spy. Rohmer guides his cast through some though-provoking material as Marxists, Fascists, and other groups fall under the watchful gaze of the spy, with most of the action based on actual accounts of undercover activities from the period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual story, 28 Jun 2005
By Colin C "Colin C" (Glasgow) - See all my reviews

This film is a bit of an oddity. It is set in the interwar years and tells the story, based on real life, of a possible double or triple agent in Paris, and his wife. It's not a typical Rohmer film, which would mean detailed explorations of the inner emotional worlds of various, usually young, characters, but is instead enigmatic and quite stagey, and perhaps slightly overlong. The main enjoyment for me came from the strange, almost theatrical performances, and the mystery which is perhaps being unravelled in an unusual way.

As usual with Artificial Eye, the release is immaculate, with good extras and a great looking print of the film.

4.0 out of 5 stars "How much do we know the people we love?", 5 Jun 2007

"Triple agent", directed by Eric Rohmer, is a movie that is highly likely to intrigue you. Set in an interesting historical period (1936-37 France), and based more or less loosely on the true story of a Russian spy, this film comes alive thanks to splendid performances by a wonderful cast.

Fyodor Voronin (Serge Renko) is a Russian living in exile in Paris, with his beautiful Greek wife, Arsinoe (Katerina Didaskalu). Fyodor, a former general, seems to have a regular job with the Russian Army Veteran's Association, but according to some, he deals with secrets he shouldn't know about. Is he a secret agent? A double, even a triple agent? His wife doesn't know, and doesn't really seem to care too much. But how far is a little ignorance a good thing?

Trust and lies are at the center of this beautiful film, that benefits from the historical perspective given by small clips of news that from time interrupt the flow of the story. This is not my favourite film but Rohmer, but it is one that I enjoyed, despite the fact that I didn't specially enjoy the ending. Recommended...

PS: I give this film 3.5 stars. If you want to watch my favourite Rohmer film, give "L'ami de mon amie" a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex espionage plot with deep undertones, 3 Dec 2006

[[ASIN:B0006Z40T6 Triple Agent [2004]

As this is based on the real life case of Nikolai Skoblin I am tempted to say watch the interview first (BE WARNED this would act as a spoiler) otherwise it is difficult to follow the complexities of the arguments in the film.

For me the film works on two levels, first it is an exploration of the politics of the period through the eyes of Fyodor (Serge Renko) the triple agent, and the dialogue is almost entirely based around politics with espionage overtones. However on a deeper level it is an exploration of the profound love between Fyodor and his wife Arsinoe (Katerina Didaskalou) expressed more or less silently through their superb acting.

Rohmer is one of my favourite directors and Triple Agent is rather a departure from his usual plots, but deep inside it is still firmly a Rohmer film.

Triple Agent requires complete concentration and probably at least two viewings to fully appreciate all its subtleties.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rohmer tackles the spy genre - results are great but not 007 stuff
Eric Rohmer makes a spy film - though as one critic puts it, that doesn't make him likely to be a front runner to direct the next James Bond movie. Read more
