3.0 out of 5 stars A preview of what is to come, 2 April 2006
By Mr. Benjamin V. Tucker "Jean-Baptiste" (Hemel Hempstead, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having been a "die-hard" Cinematic Orchestra fan and a patriot of the ninja tune record label, when a new electronica band springs up (namely Loka) the album is already in the post. Fire Shepherds begins with Safe Self Tester, reminiscent of the introduction to the aerosmith track "donn't want to miss a thing." The track then breaks into a hardcore acoustic drum and double bass session with some graceful strings carrying the melody along. My only critism is the fact that there is not enough variety and too much of the same, i am also unsure of the interlude half-way through. It seems that Loka weren't short of ideas but instead amalgamated them into the one track. Track 2, "Meet Dad," is totally different, more of a funky offbeat that meets a streetfighter background track. I feel that the bass is the key to the track and almost certainly the only consistency throughout. The band has a lot of direction and blend the perculiar phrases quite well. Track 3, "Airfling," once again it seems that loka have stuck with the bass and drums again, this time the drums have a very hollow sound which bides well with the loose, spooky feel coupled with the mute trumpet. Track 4, "Freda Mae," kicks off with a middle eastern sounding intro with a guitar-wah effect, this sets the scene well. If you have ever heard of a Polish duo known as skalpel, check out track 9 "split" on the Konfusion album. It can sound rather like this at times, which is basically a 70's spy thriller track. I can picture a guy skulking down a clinical-appearing-complex with the intention of destroying it. This is well represented by the somewhat edgy feel to the track. The final track (Tabernacle) is two parts. It is a good ending idea, a clean guitar underlying a steady drum beat with a dark bass line and finally a trumpet re-enforcing the melody. It is fairly "punchy" and the cresendos are extremely powerful. All together the album in my eyes is more than a valiant effort, but seems that since the Cinematic Orchestra have set the bench mark for this music genre, i believe all music should sound like this. Although this is slightly unfair, i am willing to bet that i am not alone in thinking this. The albums best track is probably track 4 , "Freda Mae," but honorable mentions to track 7 and 1.
