5.0 out of 5 stars She could soon outshine her brother..., 14 Dec 2004
By A Customer
I first saw Martha opening for her brother Rufus and I was won over on the spot....
This is her first EP released in the UK and demonstrates her incredible range - from the fierce title track to the beautiful and smoky closer, How Soon. I can't recommend her music highly enough. Pick this up as a taster for her first full-length album, coming early next year.
Here's what the Sunday Times said about BMFA: 'You know that song that comes along once in a blue moon and takes your breath, and steals your heart, away? Well, this is that song. No blue editing pencil has been wielded over its lyric, and long before Wainwright blasts out the chorus with her husky, emotion-shredding voice, you are left in no doubt that she means what she's singing. "You say my time here has been some sort of joke," she rasps about her move to
New York and the time she's taken to come to the boil, "Some sort of incubating period/For when I really come around." The second time she hits the bridge, she rushes the words as the backing of acoustic guitar and upright bass struggles to keep up. The effect is thrilling.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a song to be missed or dismissed, 7 Jun 2005

There are almost certainly people who will be offended by the lyrical content of this song. And maybe rightly so. But in my opinion when such words (as the title succinctly states) are sung by an artist like Martha Wainwright who rips the words angelically from her soul and delivers them to the listener with great sincerity...the power such words have to offend is greatly diminished. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it was her intention to explore and challenge how certain words make us react in certain pre-determined ways. The tragedy is not that such a titled song could be released, but that it could be dismissed out of hand. Not a song to be missed or dismissed.
