Don't miss this one!

Stokowski was a contemporary and friend of Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music in London, during the early years of the 20th Century. When Vaughan Williams died in 1958, Stokowski immediately changed the programme of a forthcoming concert so that he could perform the American premiere of VW's recently completed final symphony.

I believe that this is the greatest recorded performance of Vaughan Williams's late, craggily defiant, epic masterpiece.

Obviously it is a historic (1958) recording but the performance is so good that I would recommend it above all recent recordings (Handley, Haitink, Davis). The best modern recording is Bryden Thomson's on Chandos but the Haitink and Davis are also very good. I would even go so far to suggest that Stokowski's Cala version has the edge over Sir Adrian Boult's 1958 recording on Everest (recorded a few hours after the composer's death-he had been due to attend the recording sessions). Up until now, the Boult/Everest recording had been my favourite along with Boult's later EMI version, a wonderfully melow performance of this moving and visionary score.
Stokowski conveys a greater sense of defiance than any other recording. If you want a modern recording, however, go for Haitink or Thomson.
The other works on the CD by Hovhaness, Rieger and Creston are all attractive and increase the desirability of this record.

However, it is the epic mystery of the Vaughan Williams that resonates in the memory long afterwards.
