Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Toshiba SD240E is a well specified and attractive DVD player that is sure to win many fans. The SD240 has an interesting footprint. From the front it looks like a standard size, measuring 430x50 mm. However, a shallow depth of just 220 mm differentiates this from many competing models. The Toshiba is well constructed and has a good weighty feel to it at around 2.2 kilos. The double-angled front fascia provides an aesthetic appeal, as well as being home to most of the player's basic controls. Advanced controls can be accessed from the supplied remote which is compact, comfortable and efficient, without being overstated.

Connectivity is generally very good. A single RGB SCART socket is complemented by S-Video, composite and even component video (Y/Pb/Pr) outputs. There are analogue, digital co-axial and digital optical outputs for audio.

Various other connectivity options are possible, depending on your other AV equipment, but the manual provides clear guides to cover most eventualities. The Toshiba SD240 has an elegant on screen menu system that is a joy to use. Whether you are looking to change the subtitle language, or delving into advanced settings, the system remains intuitive to navigate. There are various features, which while not essential to making a good DVD player do add an extra touch of class. You can access parts of films by entering the time into the disc that you want to access. Disc resume is also supported.

The video and audio quality is superb and can even be tailored to suit your viewing preferences. Enhanced Picture Mode gives you control over the picture brightness and edge levels. There is also a Enhanced Audio Mode that can produce pseudo 3D from just two speakers. The player supports a variety of disc types, including DVD video, Video CD, Audio CD, MP3/WMA CD and CD-R.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tosiba 240E DVD player, 2 Jan 2005
By L. W. Newton "lwn83" (Nottingham, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I got this player to replace my old 'cheapo' player that went on the blink.
Had this player a week now and have found a problem with its ability to play dvd-r disc's, in particular printable Datawrite 4x disc's,the picture keeps freezing and the player stops, it's OK with Mirror platinum and Datawrite red V2. Also when you change audio during playback the sound goes off, you have to stop the player and restart it, then the audio returns. This happens with pressed DVD's and DVDr's, don't know if I've got a faulty unit??

My player came as region 2, theres an easy region hack for it to make it multiregion, this goes as follows-:
1, Remove any disc's from the player by pressing 'eject'
2, With the tray open type 2403960 on the remote, the present region number will appear on the screen.
3, Press enter to get to region 9 (all regions)
4, Close the tray
5, Turn player off
6. turn player back on, you now have a multiregion player.

The Toshiba has a good picture quality with colours being sharp and clear, also there is a picture enhancement mode, you can alter the brightness and sharpness of the picture to suit the TV or disc you are using. It can work with PAL or NTSC disc's, mines set to auto for ease of use.
Audio is also of high quality, I use this player in conjuction with a TEAC A/V receiver and it sounds so much better than the 'cheapo' player I had before. There is a 3D sound mode also, this is good for stereo TVs that have no surround sound, it gives an impression of surround sound.
The menu setup on the player is easy to understand and easy to use.
The remote control is very responsive and navigation is a breeze, the only problem here is the players front panel display which from the picture looks like a full display, it is not, the display is an LED type which only displays the track OR title number, a little poor for a Toshiba player.

The rear panel of the player has 1 scart socket, composite video out, audio left and right, digital co-ax and mains input socket. Theres NO optical output on this player.

The Toshiba will play DVD,DVD-r,DVD-RW,VCD, CDr, CD-RW, MP3 with ID tags, audio cd and JPEG cd(photo CD)

In the box you get-:
Player, mains lead, instructions & warrenty info, remote control & batteries. There is NO scart lead with this player!!!

A reasonable player at a reasonable price, it's got to better than the 30 quid players that seem to be flooding the market, mine only lasted four months before giving up the ghost!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Slim Beauty, 12 Dec 2004
I have been using Toshiba SD 220 for over 2 years and extremely pleased with it. Recently I bought Toshiba SD 240 E as a gift for my friend. As soon as I unpacked the player I was stunned by its appearance, size and weight. It weighs next to nothing and very slim. The instruction to make it work as a multi region player was very simple and easy to follow. It plays CD Audio, Video CD, Mp3,DVD in all formats, DVD-R, DVD-Rw, SVCD and Photo CD. It is very quick and without any noice. It is easy to use. The picture quality and audio quality are stunning.
I bought it for £50 and it is worth every penny. You could buy a cheaper multi region player for £35 but spending extra £15 for this player is well worth it. You get a fantastic DVD player from internationally well respected company. I have no hesitation in recommending this to any prospective buyer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice little machine, 19 Jan 2005
By A Customer
It was either this or the Sony NS355 for me but at the time the Sony was £10 more and had a few not so good remarks of which this had none. Now that the Sony is the same price I probably would've gone for that as it seems to have more compatibilities. What HiFi magazine gave this one five out of five stars though so there's nothing wrong with it. One downside of the buying experience was that the first delivered player had a disc tray which wouldn't open and so had to go back, bit of a pain. Tried a region one DVD in the thing and even though my TVs play NTSC videos in colour this came through in B/W. There are ways around it though with software - I've heard;
