5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive WW2 Grand Strategy, 17 Jan 2006
By Geraldine M. Dunne "gpw85" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Hearts of Iron 2 is a game of Massive scope that is suited more to older players and armchair generals;

The game spans from the start of 1936 to the end of 1947 (with an expansion due later this year to bring it into the 50s).

You can play the game as most countries (including small nations such as luxembourg and Albania aswell as the major warring nations) the game also includes a huge number (1000's) of Military and political figures from all nations who affect the game in different ways.

While the game mainly revolves around battles a great deal of game time can also spent dealing with resources, production and research.

The combat itself is large scale and abstracted, although nowhere near the risk like abstraction of other titles on this scale;
players expecting to see individual tanks duelling it out at kursk will be disappointed.

To get the most out of this game you have to put in the time and effort, planning ahead is a necessity of the game.

Hearts of Iron 2 is a truly excellent game, but it caters for a small section of the game market,
I would reccommend downloading the demo from the makers website http://www.paradoxplaza.com/
before buying this title (the demo covers only a tiny segment of the game but is better than nothing).

I feel the game has recieved undue critisism due to gamers expecting something more mainstream and action oriented who then, daunted by the scale of the game, post a bad review and scare off people who would love it!

Try out the Demo, and if you decide to buy it, download the patches, which add quite a lot of extra content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goodbye life..., 17 Nov 2005

If you are a Paradox fan, or love complex detailed strategy games and are single or would like to get divorced then this is a must own game. It is has many options for difficulty levels and scenario dates allowing you to jump right in in 1939/41 or plan your build up from 1936. You can play 'what ifs' for ever and you're always left wanting to play just one more month... It is enormously time consuming (on the longer scenarios 30 hours+), but highly rewarding and with a huge fanbase of highly professional mods available you're always left thinking, I'll try that again but this time I'll be the Russians / Brits / Yanks / Germans etc etc. Enough writing, I wonder what would happen if the Germans invaded Sweden.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Once you begin playing your social life is over, 20 Mar 2006
By S. Cobb "scobb79" - See all my reviews

This is a game that is totally dedicated to strategy and game play and low on graphics. It is not easy and takes you though the Second World War and you decide which side to take. Fairly complex to start with, but once you get the hang of it you will end up playing this for hours and hours completely losing track of time in an absorbing game where you will be constantly facing “the next challenge” and not able to switch off.

Looks like the expansion pack will solve one complaint and that is to win as the axis powers is virtually impossible by the end of 1947. The other complaint would be that it is a little too easy as the UK or Russia to defeat the Axis Powers (Not a big problem because playing as the Germans or Italians makes the game VERY, VERY hard to win).

With regards to the review below, I like the realism of the political state of Europe at the time. If Hitler had invaded Poland in 1936 then he would have been embroiled in a war with no allies and no chance of success – The complexity is added by another level of game play where Politics plays an integral part! For instance countries can offer each other a “guarantee of independence” that will force one country into the war if the other is attacked. This makes it a true meld of Politics, Industry (Supply and Manufacturing), Tactics, War and providing your army with the manpower and latest technology to defeat the enemy.
