5.0 out of 5 stars Heifetz plays Sibelius, 10 May 2009
Having read about Heifetz's legendary status in this concerto, I bought it on amazon marketplace - I was not disappointed! It is a different performance from my other favourites (Lin/Salonen, Marcovici/Jarvi on BIS)- the sound is drier, more analytical, the violin upfront with a huge personality and presence (that must be Heifetz)and the orchestral accompaniment is expert too ; the most salient feature of this performance is the (not so) slow second movement, which is dispatched in a little over 6 minutes but in my view is none the worse for that, as it's the movement I don't really enjoy as much as the other two.The overriding impression of this disc is how much Heifetz relishes the challenge - this is allegedly the most difficult violin concerto to play (the violin counterpart to Rach 3 for pianists!)
I recommend it - the other two concertos are fine too if you like them - the Sibelius dwarfs them both for me, especially the Glazunov
