OK, so why do we need yet another Beethoven cycle?

Two reasons

1) David Zinman is the first conductor to use the new B�renreiter Urtext edition of Beethoven's orchestral works, which set out to correct the many known errors and omissions from the previous Breitkopf edition, theoretically taking us closer to Beethoven's original vision.

2) Zinman also uses Beethoven's own metronome markings - which are markedly faster in many places than "traditional" 20th Century performances.

Worth having.

One of the good things about the Arte Nova label is that the value of their CDs usually well exceeds their price tags, and this one is no exception. Having only looked for certain overtures, I realised that this full set performed by far from obscure Tonhalle/ Zinman is on offer for such a great price that I might as well buy this one. The pricing, however, is not all that is good about this set. The performances have a welcome livelihood and edge to them which have their oddities (notably at the beginning of the Egmont), but also their rewards: a reminder of the experience of listening to Beethoven's string quartets by those who stick to his original tempos and markings, keeping alive the question of whether it must always be the case. Thankfully there is none of the rough sounds occasionally coming from period instruments, but the acoustics feels somehow contained and the recorded sound generally short of details expected from a late 90s recording. Though perhaps not necessarily a landmark recording, it is still a well recommendable set.
