Hard to recommend this as a "must-buy" based on the absurdly brief running time of 33 minutes, but footage of Bass discussing his groundbreaking work is hard to find so this is very much a case of "glass half-full". Having come to terms with the length, one must then find it in one's heart to forgive the frankly sub-standard picture quality. Made in 1977 this piece has Bass talking directly to camera via an off-screen interviewer about some of his key movie title sequences. The interview footage is soft, dirty and unrestored but it's Bass' words we're interested in so this is not really an issue. What IS unforgivable though is the quality of the footage used to illustrate the title sequences (played in full). Prints are scratched, dirty and washed out and most are in the wrong (ie cropped and even squeezed!) ratios. While instructive and fascinating to see all (with bizarre and notable omissions like "Bunny Lake is Missing, "North by Northwest" and "Vertigo" amongst many others) of these, there is no excuse for not inserting sequences from prints in their correct aspect ratios, preferably restored.

An easy recommendation as a rental but the RRP of £25 is nothing more than blatant opportunism based on the paucity of Bass material generally available. The distributors should be ashamed. With more care taken, some decent extras and a contextualisation of Bass' titles work within the rest of his career, this could have been a significant release but it really is nothing more than a perfunctory presentation of a sampling of a section of a great designer's work.
