5.0 out of 5 stars Beguiling and Beautiful Music From UK Folks Best Kept Secret, 25 April 2005
By S. Rogan "Shaun" (London England) - See all my reviews

There are times when you take the plunge and get rewarded with a record that confounds your expectations and implores you to write a review.Such is this exquisitely compiled 2 cd set of Shelagh McDonalds recorded output. This womans voice is to die for. Think Nick Drake mixed with Sandy Denny and you are getting close to the evocative delivery and melancholic tinge to Shelagh McDonalds voice. Having first met her on the excellent "Gather Up The Mushrooms" compilation, I was pressed to investigate further and once again Sanctuary have delivered with this amazing value for money set. Shelaghs own story is one of seemingly massive personal tragedy (she disappeared shortly after completing her second lp "Stargazer" which is included in full here). But to simply apportion interest in this release as an exercise in "where are they now?" Syd Barrett style voyeurism would be totally wide of the mark. Listen to "Liz's Song" and hear UK folk at its best. A worthy addition to any music lovers collection. Buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars songs of sad beauty, 5 Mar 2006
By John A. Atkins "jaatkins" (Lancaster) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Whilst the title of this collection might suggest a collection of traditional folk songs, this is stunning original material from McDonald - in many ways the equal of Joni Mitchell, and very similar to Fairport Convention (without the dodgy Dylan covers!)The songs are passionate and delicate folk-rock with some lovely piano and organ arrangements, all sounding lush, fresh and confident.

Also don't be discouraged by this 2 CD set being filled out with outtakes and demos. The unreleased stuff like "The Road To Paradise" are as superb as her two official albums. In short this CD is essential material...

5.0 out of 5 stars Long lost gem, 16 Jul 2007
By Stephen E. Diggle - See all my reviews

If you like Sandy Denny/Vashti Bunyan/Pentangle this is a great collection by an almost forgotten artist.
The nearest way I can pigeon-hole her albums would be "female Nick Drake during his Bryter Layter period".
The connection doesn't end there. The orchestration is by Robert Kirby who also did Nick Drakes 1st 2 albums.
This is singer songwriter music of the very highest quality.
If you think it may possibly be your thing - buy it - it will not disappoint.
My only criticism would be it that the CD's are mixed "a bit toppy"
The vinyl LP's are rare, a bit expensive, but the sound quality is absolutely superb. They are essential if you like her music. Steve Diggle
