Talk about your bad day. Casey (Thomas Jane) is an architect with a pretty wife and a comfortable suburban life. The wife doesn't know about his violent criminal past (I know, A History of Violence, but this movie came out seven years earlier). She goes out of town on business, and suddenly, on Thursday, the past comes rushing in, in the form of three or maybe four separate people who want to kill him for the drugs and/or the money they think he has. Meanwhile a social worker is there evaluating his fitness to adopt a child.

This is an excellent exercise in black humor. The way the various desperate situations pile up on one another, interfere with each other, and get resolved in some way, is utterly preposterous, and great fun. The actors have a good time with their over-the-top roles. Especially welcome on the screen are Mickey Rourke at his slimiest as a corrupt police detective, and Paulina Porizkova as a femme fatale (literally) who is extremely evil, extremely sexy, and extremely nude.

The DVD is produced in Germany, so has options for German audio and German subtitles, but you can turn those both off. Region 2 PAL. Highly recommended.

I finished watching this film about 20 minutes ago and immediately felt compelled to write a review on it.

Casey Wells (Thomas Jane) is an average guy with an average job. He's an architect with a pretty wife and a nice, clean suburban house. When his wife goes away on a business trip, an ex-partner of Casey's shows up on his doorstep wanting a place to stay, suspicious suitcase in hand. We soon realise that Casey Wells used to be a ruthless drug dealer in L.A. and that Nick (Aaron Eckhart) is an old friend keeping a big secret.

What follows is a darkly amusing movie played out in the confines of Casey's house. Disaster after disaster occurs, each more horrific than the last until we begin to see Casey crumble under the pressure. Tom Jane's lead role is a real outstanding point in this film, very rich and intriguing. Other deserved highlights come from a truly disgusting portrayal of a corrupt policeman (Micky Rourke) and a strangely fantastic portrayal of a disturbed femme fatale (Paulina Porizkova) who, despite being a tad messed-up, is hands down one of the sexiest characters to ever appear in a movie.

Thursday is a black comedy that really excels in many aspects, the acting is flawless from everyone, and it all frequently reminds the viewer of Reservoir Dogs. While the film is very violent and quite gruesome at times, a fine comic aspect grips each every scene, which brings some much needed light-heartedness to the nightmares and unforgettable people that Casey encounters. Admittedly not for everyone, but give it a go if you love fantastic acting, Tarantino-like plot-lines and... fantastic acting. What a cracker.

Thursday is an entertaining, off-putting and hilarious thrill-ride. An amazingly eclectic mix of over-the-top characters and bizarrely entertaining situations, this day-in-the-life of a gunman trying to go straight proves to be a worthy addition to the series of films that attempts to mimic the genius of Tarantino's dark-humored masterpiece Pulp Fiction. With several segments that comprise a larger story (similar to the work of Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Desperado). Each "chapter" of the film features Thomas Jane's main character spending one day at home encountering quick and memorable performances by Aaron Eckhart, Glen Plummer, Mickey Rourke, Michael Jeter, James LeGros, and an unforgettable role by Paulina Porizkova. Nick (Aaron Eckhardt) stops by his friend Casey's (Played brilliantly by Thomas Jane) house to catch up on old times.

Casey was a former gunman for drug dealers who has since reformed, become an architect, married a successful businesswoman (Paula Marshall), and is now contemplating adopting a child. Nick, who still has ties to the gangster underworld, leaves a briefcase full of drugs at Casey's house while he borrows his car to run a few errands a.k.a. unfinished business. Disgusted and angered by the introduction of drugs into his home, Casey flushes them all down the kitchen sink. That's when one at a time, Nick's double-crossed accomplices, a hilarious rapping Rastafarian drug messenger, and crooked cops all come knocking for the unsuspecting Casey, who is about to have one unbelievable Thursday.

The film opens with a hilarious sequence in a gas station in which Nick is looking for the best deal for a cup of coffee.

The run time for the Region 2 version of this film is given as 84 minutes. Through some quirk of fate, I was lucky enough to be able to get the Russian version imprted by them from Germany which has a run time of 90 minutes. And I got it here on Amazon although it now seems to have vanished.

Slight drawbacks of getting the Russian version are that the sleeve notes are all in Russian as is the menu on the actual disc. But that's no problem for an extra 6 minutes of a film like this.

The film is divided into timed segments accross the course of a single day and these come up in German but again, for a film like this, no problem and not exactly essential to your viewing pleasure.

This is a corking good film. Very Tarantio-esque in it;'s delivery but in my personal opinion, better than Tarantino.

The action gets going about five minutes in and then slows and then speeds up again and again through to a rather unexpected conclusion. The humour is very very dark, but very very funny if you like that sort of thing.

Which I do :-)

There is nothing bad about this film. I loved it Russian version or not :-) Why it's not more readily available in it's full running time both here and the USA I do not know. Why it has not received more attention again, I do not know. The only reason I found out about it was because my wife brought me a book called "Cinema Sewer" for Christmas two years ago which reviewed it.

If you like Grinshouse and Quenin Tarantino then you'll love this
