Product Description

Product Description

The Zen Micro digital music player from Creative Labs packs an incredible 5GB of storage capacity into a shell small enough to sit comfortably in your jeans pocket. It also rides nicely in your hand, with a palm-fitting profile and thumb-friendly front-panel controls. It's a bit shorter than an Apple iPod Mini, yet its rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides 12 hours of continuous playback--50 percent more than iPod mini's. The Zen Micro is compatible not merely with MP3s and WAV files, but with WMA as well. Toss in USB 2.0 connectivity and you're looking at one spiffy portable music player.

But playing isn't all the Zen Micro does. You can use it to receive FM radio (with 32 station presets to keep your favourites at the ready), and to record, either from the radio or from live sources such as voice dictation or lectures using the Zen Micro's built-in condenser microphone.

Trimmed in a luminescent blue glow and with easily visible backlit buttons, this stylish silver player holds up to 1,250 songs (83 hours) at 128 kbps or 2,500 songs (166 hours) at lower-fidelity 64 kbps (MP3/WMA)--that's a solid week's worth of music listening, never playing the same song twice. Compatibility with Microsoft's WMA compressed-audio format grants access to over 2 million downloadable songs offered promotionally or for sale online.

Perhaps the Zen Micro's coolest attribute is its DJ feature, which will shuffle not only all the songs you've loaded or all the songs in a given album, but, at your discretion, only the tracks you listen to most, or only those you rarely hear, taking the work out of selecting your favourites or hunting out all the music you're still getting to know.

For navigation, the device features a vertical, linear touchpad designed to make searching through songs or playlists easy, quick, and fun. The unit's blue, 160 x 104-pixel, electroluminescent LCD shows key functions and song details at a glance, and you can even customize the main menu to keep right at your fingertips the features that matter most to you.

Another of the Zen Micro's handy features is its personal organizer. You'll never forget an important anniversary with the onboard calendar, and it also includes a to-do list and a contacts list, all of which sync seamlessly with Microsoft Outlook (Outlook thus required for use of these features). In addition, the device offers a sleep timer and alarm so you can drift off to sleep to the strains of one playlist and wake to a completely different one.

Zen Micro's rechargeable battery is easy to replace.

The Zen Micro's removable battery is easy to swap with another fully charged battery (additional batteries sold separately), extending your listening by a half-day per swap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kicks Apple's iPod Mini Up The A**e, 30 Jan 2005
By A Customer
I bought this primarily because I wanted to take music on holiday. Taking my discman and a collection of CDs would have taken up excessive amounts of luggage space, which I couldn't afford to do.
I was already against getting an iPod, mainly because everyone seems to have or want one, and Apple were making huge sales and profits already. My determination to fight the trend, combined with my love of the underdog led to me discover Creative, and the Zen Micro (This was before the recent ad campaigns on tv etc.)
Not having a vast amount of music files, a 20GB iPod was unnecessary. The next step was the investigate the iPod Mini. Cute as it is, it was still Apple, and therefore the enemy. At 4GB, the capacity was more what I needed, but no way was I going to jump on the iPod bandwagon. A review site listed both the iPod Mini and Zen Micro, and, after some comparing, the Zen won hands down.
Firstly, it was cheaper. Lower prices are never a bad thing, and this was [at the time] at least £10 less than the Mini. £10 wasn't, I suppose, all that much when the player itself cost near enough £170, but it was £10 I could then spend on something else.
Another advantage is that the Zen has a greater storage capacity [an extra GB worth of space].
When looking into iPods, one thing I found strange was that the battery was built in. I'd also heard of people's players breaking due to battery problems. The Zen has a removable battery, so you could get another, charge both up and alternate.
The radio extra the Zen comes with is nice, and something the Mini doesn't have.
Aesthetically, the Zen is also a winner. It is at least as cute as the Apple iPod Mini, if not more so, and also comes in more colours.

Post-purchase, I'm more than happy with the Zen Micro. It's small [despite the huge box it arrived in], has great sound quality, works, and lets me take my music wherever I go. The software package included is easy to use, and very useful, particularly the audio converter, which converts music files into different formats [WMA, mp3, wav], qualities and therefore sizes.

However, nothing in life is perfect, so there are obviously some negatives.
1) The instructions ARE very basic. Very little detail is given on adding and managing music, so you have to mess around a while to work out how to use it properly. Having said that, the software is straightforward once you know what to do.
2) The touchpad. Some people have commented on how they find it difficult to use, and, for the first hour or so, so did I. The instructions on which buttons do what is too basic, and so again, you have to use a trial-and-error method of discovery. However, after the initial confusion, the touchpad controls work fine. Also, the sensitivity of this can mean if you accidentally hit a button, your track ends up being skipped. This is mainly a result of my own clumsiness, but locking the controls solves this.
3) The size. 5GB is, in truth, plenty for me at present. [up to 2500 tracks, apparently, which works out at probably about 200 albums.] However, Creative's 20GB [and bigger] models are roughly the same price, and in some cases cheaper. The Zen Micro is therefore hardly a cost-effective purchase in comparison. Part of me thinks I should have got the 20GB Zen Touch, but the tiny size, different colour option, and general cuteness of the Micro won me over.

In conclusion, the Creative Zen Micro is a fantastic little mp3 player for those with not especially huge music collections, but who still have a sizeable amount they want to take around. Recommended.

Disclaimer: I have no real reason for disliking Apple iPods apart from their success. Having said that, Creative mp3 players are far superior, and should definitely not be overlooked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Micro zen Way better than I Pod mini., 23 Feb 2005
I wanted to buy a mp3 player as i had a 256mb but it was annoying as it only held a few albums and i was getting bored of listening to the same ones and having to change the music on it.
I was gonna buy a I pod mini as alot of people have them and say how good they are. BUT i saw the micro zen on The Box and thought how cute it was. I looked them both up on the net and read reviews on them and decided that the micro zen was better.
I wanted to be different as everyone has an ipod mini, I dont know anyone with a micro Zen.
It arrives in a big packet so be sure to be in when it arrives as it wont fit through your letter box, when i opened the first thing i said was awwwww, its so cute, way nicer than an ipod mini.
Why Zen micro is better than I pod mini.
* Has more memory. Micro Zen: 5gb I pod mini: 4gb
* Its CHEAPER. £££££££££££
* Has a radio, which allows you to record of the radio.
* Smaller
* Has more colours to chose.

The micro Zen keypad is easy to use after practise, i prefer not to read manuals and figure it out myself, which i did in about 5mins.

A DOWNPOINT!!!
Yes, everyone cant be perfect!! The ear phones hurt!! But you can get yourself knew ones. BUT alot of people have said that there ipod mini headphones have broke anyway so either way you may be spending cash on headphones!!!!

So i recommend the micro Zen!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I need, 31 Dec 2004
If your music collection doesn't exceed 5gb, then this is pretty much the perfect player for you. The funcionality is great, everything is easily accessible, especially as you can set the main menu to include only the sub-menu headings you use a lot. The touch pad is also very good, you can set the sensitivity to high medium or low, and once you've got the hang of it it's simple and easy to use. I've had it since christmas eve and have already put 85 albums on it, and I think i'll be able to get around about 175 on it, as all my tracks are recoreded at 64kbps. The display is good and clear, as is the sound quality, I really can't find any faults with this player. It's also much much smaller than I expected it to be. For people with a relatively small music collection like me, or people who just don't feel the need to have every single one of their CDs with them at all times, it's basically a choice between this and the i-pod mini at the moment. I've had a go with an i-pod mini and I personally prefer the Micro. The mini is by far less attractive, with its "subtler" colours, and sharp edges compared to the minis bright and bold colours, which is also curved to fit your hand. Also, the minis are known for their problems regarding their batteries, which then require the player to be sent back, cause you can't get to the battery yourself, which I'd imagine must be very aggrivating. I received a spare battery with my player, although I think that offer is now over, but still, you can easily access the battery in this player much like most mobiles phones, so if theres a problem, or when the battery eventually reaches the end of it's life, you don't have to go without your player for weeks, you simply slip in a new battery. I say if you're looking for a player of this size memory, then this is definitely the one should you go for.
