5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back Stargate how ive missed you, 12 April 2005
By Richard Marsh "Midnight" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This DVD represents something the fans have hoped for since plots began to slip in mid season 6: a return to form for Stargate SG-1. Season opener 'New Order' was teh highest rated episode for the show in a long time and deservedly so. The episode returns the Goa'uld to the positon of sly backstabbing malevolence we enjoyed before we could kill one every week and presents some of the pace fun and humour of classic Stargate as Daniel and Weir prepare for the Goa'uld arrival while Carter and Teal'c get to take part in an Asgard intrigue-and-action story tied to the events on Earth by O'Neill's predicament. A strong two parter on many levels which reinvigorates the franchise.
'Lockdown' is an intriguing mystery which once again provides pace and excitment coupled with SG-1 wit:
'You shot me?'
'Don't change the subject'
The episode slips a little on SG-1's continuing Cold War attitude to the Russians but at least here that's portrayed as an O'Neill quirk alone.
To show how well the wit has returned to the show, 'Zero Hour' is unashamably a comic episode centering on O'Neill's ascending to commander of the SGC and dealing with its everyday problems while already treading on the toes of his former team.
One gripe about the DVD is the extras, which could eb described as minimalist at best. For the first time in a good while there are no audio commentaries which i suspect is because they ran out of things to say. Admittedly they did dissolve last year into Peter Deluise pointing out his cameos but its a shame to stop them just as there are once again things to discuss.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gate of Greatness!, 3 Mar 2005
Series 8 opens here with 4 great episodes. In 'New Order parts 1 & 2' the Replicators return in style with new and improved forms. As well as the Replicators we meet some new Goa'uld and a new Asgard ship called the Daniel Jackson. 'Lockdown' sees the return of Anubis, but not as we know him. Its great to once again see Richard Dean Anderson back in the starting role in 'Zero Hour' after his absence in a lot of series 7. This episode provides humour and the technician finally gets a name!

Overall Stargate SG-1 keeps getting better and better with greater story lines, directing and special effects. The characters develop even more with O'Neill becoming General and Teal'c getting an apartment. Although Jack O'Neill provides a great substitute it's sad to see general Hammond gone. The only disadvantage I can think of is that unlike past series this DVD has no audio commentaries.
If you are a Stargate or Science fiction fan this is a must have DVD. Oh and Teal'c now supports hair!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great show, shame about the extras, 13 April 2005
I've been a long time fan of SG1 for many years now and usually I'm first out the starting block to pre-order the DVDs.

However, I cannot express how disappointed I am with the decision not to include the usual commentaries for every episode with this season (I understand that we may get a few commentaries on later disks).

The impression persists that SG1 fans have been short-changed so that the production can concentrate on promoting the new spin-off Stargate: Atlantis (which does have commentaries on its DVDs).

This is a slap in the face to SG1 fans, who have given the show their support for so long. Suddenly, the production staff seem to be saying, we don't matter any longer and can put up with less quality than Atlantis fans. It's also annoying to see the SG1 disks littered not with extras about SG1, but extras promoting Atlantis.

I hope this decision is reversed for S9. I know I'm not the only SG1 fan who looks forward to the DVD releases, mostly for the commentaries. Getting pristine copies of the episodes is fine and dandy, but its the commentaries which make the difference for many of us as to whether we rush out and pre-order these...or wait and 'get them at some point'.

The annoying lack of commentaries aside - this was a great season for the show, which shows no signs of flagging. It contains some of the funniest, most dramatic and intense episodes SG1 has ever seen, particularly in the latter half of the season. The episodes on this disk were a terrific start to an exciting rollarcoaster year of entertainment.
