5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value and much to relish, 23 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This is a splendid DVD. If you are a fan of Daniel Barenboim’s conducting or playing (as I am), or just of classical music in general and have an interest in the people who are involved in performing it, then this is worth seeing. It gives a real insight into what forces influenced one of the world’s greatest conductors, and into how he himself sees the world, and what he wants to achieve. We get a taste of the places that mean most to him, and a series of short interviews (dispersed throughout the film) with the people who have worked with him. There are scenes with him performing, conducting, rehearsing, revisiting old haunts and even at home or with friends. Barenboim himself tries to explain his views and why he holds them. One of the best moments is the – apparently hidden – filming of the explosive episode when Barenboim continued to conduct his orchestra to play Wagner at the end of a concert in Israel. Following that was a really hostile diatribe against Barenboim given by an Israeli official. Stunning and dramatic viewing. I loved every minute of this DVD, and must watch it again as there is so much to take in.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 27 Nov 2005
By A Customer
Bought this as a gift for my father who is a great Barenboim fan - said it was very entertaining and the musical pieces were excellent. As a man who watches and considers himself a conneissuer of classical music I know it has to be good for the rave review he gave it.
