1.0 out of 5 stars We're playing a different game, 12 Feb 2006

This game is horrible. I can forgive dated graphics but the repetitive mediocrity of the gameplay is unforgiveable. Courier quests running you from one end of the map to the other are so 90s. The mini-games will have you tearing your hair out particularly as you labouriously pick your way through almost every container.

It's true that combat is challenging. It's also very very poor.

4.0 out of 5 stars SciFi RPG - tough one!, 18 Jan 2006
By A Customer
If anyone is looking for a tough RPG (not an action RPG) then this is it. Not in your usual fantasy setting but sci fi, I think that this game takes it's hat off to System Shock 1/2 rather than tries to copy them.

Some nice touches in there as well, being able to make items from other items and easily switchable upgrades. The RPG element is stat-lite, you gradually earn XP and spend them on about 8 stats.

The tough part is the monsters, of which there are many, and there are few that can be taken out with distance weapons, so you have to take it easy and save often.

Overall this game is recommended, certainly a good time filler until Oblivion/Gothic hit the stores!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A CYBERPUNK cRPG THAT FIREWALLED ITS OWN FUTURE, 4 Jul 2008
By NeuroSplicer (Freeside, in geosynchronous orbit) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
There are not enough futuristic cRPGs - and the good ones are quite rare. So I was more than willing to cut NEURO HUNTER some slack. Well, it needed it.

I picked this for a song, since this is the fate of games ruined by over the top DRM schemes: sadly, NEURO HUNTER harbors StarFORCE. I had vowed never to buy another DRM-damaged game. However, they keep stuffing the sales bins at really tempting prices so I knew I had to come up with a solution.
Luckily, I have cannibalized a couple of older PCs and rigged an unconnected system that I keep in the basement: this I can afford to put at risk. For some time now I run all the DRM bargains on it. After the $5million class-action suit against UBISOFT/StarFORCE and the BIOSHOCK/MASS EFFECT fiascoes, it is bound to see some action.

The game is an FPS cRPG with character development and item equipping. In a cyberpunk dystopia you fill the boots of, well, Neuro Hunter, a net runner that got screwed by his shady employer (Johnson Biotech) and now runs for his life - and all life for that matter.
The graphics are certainly dated but even in their day they were far from impressive - and, what is worse, character navigation made me a bit...nauseous.
Apart from the usual cRPG features (inventory, bartering, NPC dialogs and the like), the game contains a number of interesting original ideas (from hacking mini-games to virtual strategy battles) but they fail to save the day.

As someone who is a great fan of WILLIAM GIBSON's cyberpunk noir (not to mention using the NeuroSplicer handle!) it pains me not to be able to recommend NEURO HUNTER. Nevertheless, I cannot honestly rate it higher than 3 stars.
