Synopsis

Two decades after the Zucker brothers delivered the definitive word on in-flight comedy with the sidesplitting AIRPLANE movies, the question of how to regenerate the genre has finally been answered. Combine the relentless joke-fest of the Zucker movies, add a cast which appears to have fallen out of a 1970s blaxploitation movie, and serve with a touch of Wayans-brothers-inspired hilarity: today's in-flight meal is a dish called SOUL PLANE! The story begins when Nashawn Wade (Kevin Hart) successfully sues an airline and sets up the first black-owned flight service with the money. Entitled NWA Airlines, planes come resplendent with an on-board casino, a club, scantily clad flight attendants, and enough props to sustain laughs throughout the entire film. Captain Mack (Snoop Dogg) is the pilot, a laid back character with a dubious background. He is both afraid of heights and uncertain where the cockpit is located. A white, middle class family are also along for the ride, lead by the nerdy Elvis Hunkee (Tom Arnold). They serve as the butt of many jokes, particularly because they are stuck in the lower class section of the plane, which resembles a subway car decked out with handrails for the standing-room-only section. The cast clearly relishes working with the material, and they manage to combine an infectious sense of fun with an endless string of one-liners. First-time director Jessy Terrero keeps SOUL PLANE running at a turbulent pace throughout, firing off gags straight from take off, and ending the movie with a smooth landing--ultimately providing a satisfying flight for all passengers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Come Aboard The Soul Plane, 31 Mar 2006

Now you think of a black comedy and you think about the stereotypes and you probably think. "Bah another black comedy" and trust me this is not very unique when you see it because you see all the cliche's. The Slutty white girl who's dad is oblivious to the fact, the dumb guy who had a high profile job and you never know why because he is stoned half the time & The cliche stereotypical gay guy who minces around like a queen.
Cliches aside you have a really fun and enjoyable movie, it didn't stand well in the United States but i found this movie really funny and is original in a way.
The story goes like this. A black guy has an accident on an airplane and sues the airline for a few hundred million dollars and this money makes him see the errors in the other airlines operation so he decides to start his own pimped out airline.
Great movie and it is one you should check out because it is very enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A one-way trip to crude hilarity, 22 Dec 2004
By Daniel Jolley "darkgenius" (Shelby, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Sure, it's lewd, crude, and basically ridiculous, but Soul Plane is also a very funny movie, and that is what really matters. Certainly, it could be better - it starts out with an actual plot, but that pretty much falls to the way side once Flight 69 is airborne on its maiden flight, and the film doesn't end so much as it just stops playing. It's also full of clichés and toilet humor, and those without a sense of humor when it comes to this sort of thing will probably deride the racial stereotypes put in play here.

It's a pretty simple story idea. Nashawn (Kevin Hart) turns a toilet-related in-flight mishap (along with the horrible death of his dog) into a lawsuit-garnered one hundred million dollar windfall. Having seen firsthand how an airplane passenger should not be treated, he decides to take his money and start his own airline - and thus NWA Airlines, the first all-black airline, is born. The radical transformation begins in the terminal, but the pink hip-hop plane with its bootylicious flight attendants, drastically different passenger compartments, onboard bar and dance floor, and overall atmosphere is unbelievably over-the-top. Then you throw in Snoop Dogg as the plane's captain and inject a white family headed by Tom Arnold into the mix, and you've got one crazy movie. A few things don't work very well, especially the white boy who instantly transforms into a hip-hop video director and, to some degree, the incredibly gay male flight attendant, but most of the jokes, no matter how crude or obscenity-laced, are quite funny. The two female security guards deserve special recognition for their hilarious efforts.

Most people should already know whether or not they are likely to enjoy Soul Plane before watching it; making Airplane look like lofty, sophisticated humor, this film seemingly takes great joy in seeing just how low and far it can push the envelope of humor. If you think every film should have a point other than simple entertainment, you should not book a flight on the Soul Plane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good fun, 15 Feb 2005
By A Customer
When i first watched soul plane it was on a scratched dvd so the picture quality and the sound wasnt top notch. but i can tell you it was still very funny even though i didnt watch every minute of it. Soul plane is basically about a coloured fellow who has a bad experience on a bog standard everyday plane. He decides to sue the aeroplane company and succeeds recieving a few million dollars. Its what this guy decides to do with this money which is where the comedy starts, he has a vision of a bling bling plane like you've never seen before. dance floors aboard with hip hop goin on, reclining lazy boards with 50 inch tvs. The toilet has a lady steward around at all time and the captain pilot is snoop dog, which you could probably tell would be funny in itself. I recommend this film to anyone who likes a good black comedy cos its not one of those lame ones like jonsons family vacation which is rubbish.Enjoy it!.
