Manufacturer's Description

Be a hero! - Play the only super powered, massively multiplayer online game!
If you’ve always yearned to have powers far beyond those of mortal men, if you’ve always wanted to be adored by citizens and feared by villains… then City of Heroes is the game for you.

Recreate your unique heroic vision with the most detailed character creation system ever created for a superhero game, discover incredible powers, and defeat evil in a huge living city - packed with thousands of fellow heroes!

Wield amazing powers, battle real foes! - Choose from hundreds of powers and lay the smackdown on evil!
Bored with playing with a mere sword? Fed up with slaying rats for hours in your average MMO game? City of Heroes gives you power from the get-go, letting you bust gangs of crooks and vicious street criminals from the moment you step into Paragon City.

Casual gamer? Be a casual hero - Saving the world might be a full time job, but you don’t have to be a full time player.
If the phrase ‘MMORPG’ makes you think of estranged partners and late nights hunched over the PC, stop worrying. You can play City of Heroes and still have time for a real life, if you’d like...!

Fast-paced missions, quick character creation and real ‘pick up and play’ gameplay mean that you can get into Paragon City, vanquish evil and be back home in time for tea.

Die-hard player? Be a die-hard hero! - Of course, if you want to put the time in, there’s plenty to explore in Paragon City.
With 50 levels of heroic content, over 25 huge areas to explore, hundreds of powers to experience and endless character generation possibilities, there’s enough to keep even the hardest of hardcore players entertained for a long time. Even beyond the fabled Level 50, there are new challenges for the seasoned player - with more content being added to the game on a regular, ongoing basis. Of course, we haven’t even mentioned Trials, Task Forces and the ever-present Badges to be completed and found - you’ve just gotta get ‘em all....

Team up with experienced players, or mentor a rookie - Every hero needs a helping hand now and again - that’s where your sidekick comes in....
In the best comic book tradition, City of Heroes allows a hero of appropriate Security Level to recruit a sidekick to help them in their never-ending battle against crime. With sidekicks being temporarily boosted to a similar power level, they can experience the trial and tribulations of higher levels - while getting juicy experience at the same time. Of course, if you’re playing City of Heroes and want to encourage a friend to join the fight, this unique feature ensures you don’t have to slow down your hero’s advancement while waiting for your sidekick to catch up.

A different kind of hero, for different kinds of players - Choose a heroic Archetype that suits your play style.
Some of us like to get right in there and punch evil on the nose. Some of us laugh in the face of terror, shrugging off blows like rain. And some of us just like to hang out in the back and zap people while we giggle. And we’re all heroes!

City of Heroes gives you five initial hero Archetypes to choose from, each of them heroic in their own right but also all fulfilling crucial roles in a super powered team. With the up-close-and-painful Scrapper and the hard-as-granite Tanker, those of you who like to get your virtual hands dirty can deal out justice at street level. The long distance expert, the indispensable Blaster, deals out damage from a range while trying to avoid getting hurt themselves. They’ll need protection from other teammates if they’re going to survive.

If clouding men’s minds or healing the sick is more your bag, you’ll want to play a Controller or Defender - masters of the mind, protectors of Paragon. These vital team members will control the villains you’re fighting, and offer healing or protection to the team.

Whatever your play style, there’s enough variety for everyone - and with eight character slots per server, you can experience every one.

5.0 out of 5 stars SuperMan!!!!, 19 Oct 2005
By Winstone "williamwin" (GOD KNOWS) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This game is amazing. |I read a review of it saying it was unbalanced so i decided to skip it. When a pcgamer magazine gave me a 14 day trial i put it in my computer and started it up and loved any minute of it. I felt completley at home and really powerful unlike anarchy online.

There are loads of powers to choose from such as super speed and a huge stone mallet to whack enemies with,[ my fave is super jump ].

There are six classes to choose from, the blaster which is a far ranged damage dealer guy, the defender whos is like a healer, the scrapper a melee high damage dealer, the controller who of course getsbehind the brain of enemies and the tanker who can takes a ton of damage like the hulk.

Team work is a big part in COH and lets u do special missions and it is a shame people are all on WOW [world of warcraft]leaving COH in the dust with no friends to play with. rarely big events happen such as there have 2 alien ivasions since the release and last winter there was a global attack of giant snowmen which could have a snwbll fight in thier remains.

Summing up City of heroes is the greatest game ive ever played and probably will be for a long time i,m also looking forward to city of villains. Go on dont bother with wow and get COH.

5.0 out of 5 stars The MMORPG Of Choice, 6 Sep 2005
By Mr. A. Graham "andybsg1" (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Where do you start with a game like this? City of Heroes is quite simply, a must have game. Being primarily a console gamer, I was still intrigued when I first heard about this game way back in it's early development and every time I heard updates on it I took the time to read them. The more I read, the more I anticipated the game. On release day, I was straight down my local game shop to pick a copy up and haven't looked back!

Playing a hero, you have a choice of 5 'archetypes' to pick from, each of which has a clearly defined role in a team. You have the tank, the guy who can take whatever you throw at him and is basically your human shield. The Blaster, the ranged damage dealer of the team. The Scrapper, melee fighter and another high damage dealer. The Defender, about as close as you get to a healer, these guys make your team stronger and the enemies weaker. Finally, we have the Controller, these guys are exactly what their name suggests, crowd control. They lock down the enemies, stopping the rest of the team getting overwhelmed.

Within each of these archetypes, you get to pick a primary and secondary powerset from a list of between 5 and 8 per archetype. For example, you can have a blaster who's primary powers are fire based and their secondary are ice based. Your scrapper could have a broadsword and rapid healing. Each powerset has about 10 powers in it and you'll start with one from your primary and one from your secondary with more available as you level up.

As if that wasn't enough, there are also 'pool' powers. There are around 8 pools, each with four powers in and anyone can pick up to 4 pools to complement their main powers. These pools are also where the 'travel' powers of flight, teleporting, super speed and super jumping(no wall crawling or web swinging unfortunately).

Hero design is extensive, with masses of costume options and body scaling. Capes are not available at the start and must be earned in game, along with additional slots for up to four costumes.

You can temporarily team up with other heroes, up to 8 in a team and can also form a Super Group with up to 75 members in and this is where COH excels. The community in the game is great and it won't be long before you have regular team mates to deliver corny superhero puns with. The game 'can' be played solo, depending on the hero you have, but the beauty of it really is in teaming and when you have a well designed 6 man team who have played together regularly tearing through enemies and telling bad jokes on the way, that is when you realise how great the game really is.

The City itself is set out into different areas which are divided by walls and security check points with some of them requiring that you're a certain level to enter. The first few levels come very quickly and the learning curve is steep,

MMORPG's are a growing genre in computer gaming but they do seem to follow a standard template, the majority being set in fantasy worlds and agonising hours spent repeating the same actions over and over to increase your rating at that particular task, or lots of time spent trading. COH avoids all of this, there are no skills and while you can trade certain items to enhance your powers, this is not essential, meaning the action is always fast paced.

If you want to try out a MMORPG, COH has to be the number one choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Massive, 6 May 2006
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game a week after it was released in Europe last year, purchased at the same time as 9 other games. The genre never really appealled to me before, thinkin it was all dungeons and dragons type of garbage, but the packaging kinda grabbed my attention so i thought i would give it a go. It was the 3rd game i installed out of the 10 games i purchased and i didnt stop playing it for 6months, leaving the other 2 that i had installed alone and even leaving the other 7 in their unopened packaging.

I have to say that it forced me to eat my words on this type of game. I dont think i have ever played a game as many hours as this one, it is quite possible to not move from the pc for the whole weekend it is so addictive! There 6 main character types to choose from but so many variations of them that are possible, along with two epic character types available once you reach level 50 with one of your characters. The two epics are awesome! Its subscription based, but offers fantastic value for money.. The social side of the game is a huge part of it and for the adults amongst us, you will find lots of 20s, 30s, 40s year olds on here with teens, a great mix of guys n gals, has very wide appeal and an enormous amount of story content fused with some really good humour too!

I have lots of level 50 characters, but its still very appealling to start new character types and do it all over again, each time i do, i experience new content or huge amounts of things that i missed before. Theres lots of community sites about this game on the net, you should be able to find out a stack of info about it along with tips on keybinds, badges, accolades, powers even guides on making 'the best build'.

Villains is ok, but still very light on the content compared to heroes, if you are gonna choose between the two, pick up the heroes you wont be disappointed.

Theres so much more that can be said about this game, so much that i think Amazon's webpage will reject my review for being too long. So all i will say now is that its the most absorbing and addictive game allowing you complete escapism, it really is a must have and for those that decide to give it a try, you will wonder afterwards why you needed to read reviews for reassurance.

WOW....? Thats a childs game, this is as close to a perfect game as you will ever get, so what are you waiting for?
