In the best comic book tradition, City of Heroes allows a hero of appropriate Security Level to recruit a sidekick to help them in their never-ending battle against crime. With sidekicks being temporarily boosted to a similar power level, they can experience the trial and tribulations of higher levels - while getting juicy experience at the same time. Of course, if you’re playing City of Heroes and want to encourage a friend to join the fight, this unique feature ensures you don’t have to slow down your hero’s advancement while waiting for your sidekick to catch up.

Some of us like to get right in there and punch evil on the nose. Some of us laugh in the face of terror, shrugging off blows like rain. And some of us just like to hang out in the back and zap people while we giggle. And we’re all heroes!

City of Heroes gives you five initial hero Archetypes to choose from, each of them heroic in their own right but also all fulfilling crucial roles in a super powered team. With the up-close-and-painful Scrapper and the hard-as-granite Tanker, those of you who like to get your virtual hands dirty can deal out justice at street level. The long distance expert, the indispensable Blaster, deals out damage from a range while trying to avoid getting hurt themselves. They’ll need protection from other teammates if they’re going to survive.

If clouding men’s minds or healing the sick is more your bag, you’ll want to play a Controller or Defender - masters of the mind, protectors of Paragon. These vital team members will control the villains you’re fighting, and offer healing or protection to the team.
