Product Description

Album Description

Steven Soderbergh's antic sequel to his remake of the Rat Pack's shaggy casino caper may well be one of the most playfully goofy action flicks to come out of contemporary Hollywood. But while the director confounds the expected sequelitis at every turn, he wisely lets Irish club DJ cum film composer David Holmes reprise the same winning formula that made his collaborations on the previous film and Soderbergh's underrated jewel Out of Sight such hipster delights. While Holmes' original music is rooted in 70's-inspired acid-jazz, he punctuates its innate club cool with an eclectic, equally hip selection of source music. The film's foreign locales inspire choices like Ornella Vanoni's seductive opener "L' Appuntamento" and Piero Umiliani's shadowy " Crepuscolo Sul Mare," while elsewhere Holmes indulges his own savoury tastes for everything from Gallic neo-psychedelia (Roland Vincent's "L.S.D. Partie") to adventurous jazz (Grusin's "Ascension to Virginity") and rock-exotica mash-ups (John Schroeder's intoxicating "Explosive Corrosive Joseph"). --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Holmer's Latest Odyssey, 14 Jan 2005
Listening to a new David Holmes album in January is the aural equivalent of a ray of winter sunshine and the soundtrack to 'Ocean's 12' fits beautifully into the ever evolving oeuvre of a man that remains at the very forefront of innovative British music, whether as a DJ, composer/arranger, band member, producer, or whatever. This is the soundtrack to Steven Soderbergh's heist sequel, and this time round Holmes has decided to dispense with the dialogue and make a soundtrack in the traditional sense.

The music has evolved from the Las Vegas lounge jazz of 'Ocean's 11' into a more cosmopolitan European feel, which builds on some of the funkysoul of the peerless 'Come Get It I Got It' and 'The Free Association' while also including some loping beats and a healthy dollop of fuzzy psych (including a track, Faust 72, from last year's psychfunk belter 'Cherrystones - Hidden Charms'). As ever, the found sounds blend seamlessly into the overall feel of the piece and this is surely one of Holmer's greatest skills.

For me, David Holmes has now established himself as a soundtrack composer on a par with John Barry, Ennio Morricone and Angelo Badalamenti and when he's on this kind of form should be judged at that exceptional level. It's just a pity that there are very few filmmaker's around deserving of his input. Indeed who cares what the picture's like when the music's this good?

2.0 out of 5 stars The a la menthe - laser dance, 5 Dec 2007
FYI I was a little surprised to find that the album didn't have 'The a la menthe' by La Caution as used in the laser dance scene.... You have to hunt for the album Peines de Maures or Arc en Ciel Pour Daltoniens..

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, Shame About the Movie, 1 Jul 2005
I was pretty disappointed with the movie, but was worth watching for the soundtrack alone. Brings back vibes from such movies as 'Bullit' and adds a superb feel to the movie where the storyline is otherwise lacking. David Holmes did a superb job on bringing back that wonderful jazz sound so often used in movies in the mid to late 60's and the stand out tracks for me, are without a doubt $165 Million + Interest [into] The Round Up and Lifting The Building. Even if you haven't seen the movie this is still one heck of an album on its own. My only reason for giving it 4 stars is that it is a movie soundtrack and looses one star for the poor movie it was based on, but otherswise a cracking album.
