This score is one of the reasons why I find Bernard's 1934 film of Les Misérables to be superior to other adaptations. Although music is diappointingly scarce in the films (only an hour for a 4 and a half epic), what is there adds to the already powerful storyline, directing and acting. It is used in key moments to highlight the romance, tension and drama of this story to brilliant effect.

The re-recording of this score is by the Slovak Radio Symphony orchestra, with conductor Adriano, and they do a great job, which is more than can be said for other re-recordings of older film scores (Nino Rota's Romeo and Juliet immediately comes to mind). At least I haven't noticed much difference in the sound, but this is not surprising since the CD was recorded mostly from the score to a suite which Honegger wrote himself.

If you are a fan of great film music, or of Honegger, or this film version of Les Misérables, this is definitely one to buy.
