This disk is the first in a series of three which provide the known recordings Dame Nellie Melba made for Victor records. Together with the separate but related set of Gramophone Company reissues (four further disks) also on the Naxos label, they provide the full surviving series of Melba's disk recordings. The recordings, all originally made by the acoustic method, and remastered from disk do inevitably have some noise, although an excellent job has been done on remastering to reduce the noise where possible. This particular disk is potentially more special than the others as track 3 contains Melba's only known recorded duet with Caruso, an excerpt from La Boheme. From this duet it is possible to see why they were both such stars when performing together. The other tracks contain a range and variety of arias which were popular with audiences at the time.
