2.0 out of 5 stars Sweelinck difficult to play well, 14 Nov 2007
By J. E. Knibbe "Johan E. Knibbe" (Alkmaar, Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are not so much cd's available of the works of the 'Dutch Orpheus' of Amsterdam. Is it because it's difficult to make real music of it? As astonishing it is that so little of his choral and song works are in the shop, you can buy his organ and/or harpsichord works produced by some labels. Rampe played Sweelinck on this CD by MDG at the organ (Soest-Ostönnen and Tangermünde), clavichord and harpsichord.
The four different instruments are recorded at soudlevels so very different, that you need to keep your volumecontrol continuously at hand. A not so clever recording strategy. Ostönnen sounds to far away, only Tangermünde and the nice harpsichord have been given the right balance of directness and spaciousness.
Rampe plays too academic to steal my heart. His embellishments are not always well chosen and too abundant. He gives too little sight on the grand lines of the musical architecture of the pieces (e.g. in the chromatic fantasy). At the harpsichord he looses pace by all those arpeggio's. And where is the sparkling wit of the echo fantasy, here played in such a dull way?
Ergo, Rampe cannot at all compete with Leonhardt at the Kloosterkerk Den Haag, Winsemius at the Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam and Berben in Luik.
