Product Description

Single Description
The new recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas?", written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984, will have all proceeds contributed to The Band Aid Trust. Performed this time by Band Aid 20, so named because it is 20 years since the release of the original recording, the release also features the original recording from 1984. Recorded at Air Studios in London, the revamped version is produced by Nigel Godrich, best known for his work with Radiohead. Midge Ure is the executive producer. Controversial British contemporary artist Damien Hirst has committed to support the project and has design the sleeve artwork.

The stellar line-up of artists that appear on the record are Robbie Williams, Dido, Chris Martin (Coldplay), Sir Paul McCartney (bass guitar), Bob Geldof, Midge Ure, Radiohead, Bono, Daniel Bedingfield, Natasha Bedingfield, Turin Brakes, The Thrills, Will Young, Katie Melua, Busted, Joss Stone, Lemar, Jamelia, Keane, Beverley Knight, The Darkness, Dizzee Rascal, Ms Dynamite, Snow Patrol, Sugababes, Travis, Danny Goffey (Supergrass, drums), Rachel Stevens, Estelle, Feeder, The Divine Comedy, Moloko, Shaznay Lewis, Morcheeba, Ash, and Damon Albarn (serving tea).

2.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to surpass the original, 16 Nov 2004
By M. Hall "mooseba" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've just heard this on Radio 1 and what can I say? Well, it's different. The song opens up with the sombre sound of a piano, and the strumming of guitars. Is this the same song? Chris Martin confirms it is with those classic opening lines. Dido next, yawning '...and in a world full of plenty...'. Thank God for Robbie, putting some much needed power into the song, doing his bit with '...but say a prayer, pray for the other ones...'. Sugartarts, I mean babes, up next with their totally un-emotional offering. Travis' Fran Healy next doing a good job with '...where the only water flowing...'. Will Young and Jamelia team up next doing quite a good job continuing with '...is the bitter sting of tears...'

Now the bit we've all been waiting for; music's biggest star Bono with his unforgettable line '...but tonight thank God it's them, instead of you...'

I won't go into the rest of the song for risk of spoiling it for people who haven't heard it yet, but I do have to comment on the inclusion of a rap by Dizze Rascal half way through the song: I nearly choked on my corn flakes this morning when I heard this and it just does not go with the song whatsoever. I would say the artists that stand out on this have to be Tom 'Keane' Chaplin, Fran Healy and Bono. People will argue about this song for many months, if not years, to come, but at the end of the day all these artists (and Ms. Dynamite) gave up their hard earned time to record this song for one of the most deprived regions in our world today, so good on them. Don't forget, ALL proceeds from this single will go to help starving children and to help rebuild broken lives. So, 2 stars for content, 5 stars for the cause.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's about more than music., 29 Nov 2004
It's simple.
If you like the new version, buy this.
If you prefer the original, buy this. It has the original on.
If you want to hear the Live Aid version, buy this AND buy the Live Aid DVD.
If you don't like the song at all, buy it anyway or go to the website
and cut out the middle man.

It's time to make poverty history. This is a small step in that direction.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buying this single is not the only way to help..., 4 Dec 2004
I wanted to like this new version of "Do They Know It's Christmas", even though I wasn't excited by the line-up. After all, some of the artists on the 1984 version were naff, but they still made a decent record. However, this new version is just disappointing, completing lacking the power of the original.

I have heard, though, a number of people like me, who have been disappointed by the song, but said they'd "buy it anyway, as it's for a good cause".

If this sounds like you, ask yourself if you really need a silver disc you'll never listen to in return for your money, when you could still help by just giving the money directly? If you search for the Live Aid DVD web site, they have a page where you can donate to Band Aid either by Credit Card (though be warned WorldPay charge commission on donations) or an address where you can send cheques, etc.

After all, the record is not about the music, it's about charity...
