Surprisingly enjoyable, 21 Dec 2005
Spartan is probably one of the coldest movies I've seen. The title itself sounds cold, and echos an old Greek nation of warriors that took on the Athenians. The film starts with cold, emotionless soldier training. It follows one of the trainers to develop into a story about a disappeared girl, and the mission to find her. It takes quite a while before you realize who the girl is, and longer still until the full scope of the story is revealed. The movie may well not be to everyone's taste. The emotionless tone may put people off - yet it fits superbly, as it is about essentially emotionless people, soldiers, on a very cold-blooded mission. It takes a long while for the viewer to build a relationship with the characters, and some viewers may never do. The plot twists increase the tension as the story progresses, and by the end it was a very gripping film. Spartan is a surprisingly enjoyable film. Not everyone's cup of tea, but as thrillers go, it is definitely worthwhile.

In the tradition of Forsyth...., 30 Mar 2005
Spartan. A film you've probably not heard of, + Val Kilmer, = Rubbish....does'nt it?The tagline for this film is "She's missing". And for the first hour that's as much information as you've got. The story revolves around Kilmer, who you never really find out who he is, at the start he's an army trainer, then he's called a Master Gunner, then he's a detective, then a marine, then secret service, then navy seal....he appears to be all of these but with no fixed boundary. He's an expert. If you think this starting description sounds way too corny, your wrong. This is a story in the style of Forsyth, an intelligent thriller where the character is nothing short of believable. David Mamet definatley picked the right man in Kilmer, who apparently has a great love and interest in espionage stories, for this role. He is an extremely professional agent, who starts to show his weaknesses as the film progresses and he is forced to work outside of his comfortable chain of command. If you've read and liked books like The Deciever, Icon or The Fist Of God, or like Kilmer have an interest in espionage, then this film is for you. A very realistic look at a government operation in progress without the tinsel of a hollywood action movie. Rated 4 out of 5

Intelligent thriller, 19 Jun 2006
Val Kilmer is back to top form here as the secret service agent at the top of his game who finds himself involved in a kidnap of a VIP politician - of course, this is David Mamet, so the plot has a way of going into blind alleys and left turns that you never quite see coming. In fact, do yourself a favour, and find out as little as you can about the plot, you'll enjoy the movie all the more! Having said that, the loose ends dont quite all tie up, and the ending does not live up to the build up, but this is only a minor quiblle when the acting and script are of this quality.
The music is minimal, and the directing is not flashy, but all serves to further the story - a quality so lacking in Hollywood these days.
The pace never lets up, and the script of course is sharp and real. William H Macy plays a small but pivotal role in a rare serious role, and the rest of the cast exude realism in all the roles, not least Ed Reilly who casts off his Married with Children tag with this one.
This is not one to see just because you want action, but for an intelligent thriller that engages the brain, thumbs up.
